Apple Carplay issues in 2018 Chevy Silverado Custom

I've got a coworker who's got a 2018 Chevy Silverado Custom series truck.  I was showing him how to use Apple CarPlay and I'm running into an issue where I'm not able to minimize CarPlay and go back to his radio.  In my 2019 Chevy Cruze I'm able to switch between the two no problem and he does not listen to music or anything on his phone so without the radio he'd be driving in silence on the way to and back from work every day.  Any ideas what needs to happen?  Using a brand new iPhone 12 and it did this on his previous phone as well.  Only thing I haven't tried doing is updating his trucks infotainment system if that would do anything.

I have the i05 in my truck (8" screen) and I can listen to the radio while using car play (I rarely do as I'm always on either Amazon Prime Music or Apple Music).
I just hit the home button while the radio is playing and then tap the Car Play button and it takes me to Car Play while the radio still plays.
I'm not familiar with the head unit on the Custom but, I would think it should work similarly?

Yeah that's what I've tried doing.  Once we have CarPlay pulled up I press the home button and nothing happens.  I can hold it, press it multiple times and it will not take us to the main home screen of the head unit.  That's exactly what I do on my car and it works just fine so I'm not sure what the problem is.  It does seem from looking at different models that this head unit might be a lesser model compared to that of the 1LT and higher but still doesn't make much sense that it wouldn't work at all.

Is his setup OEM? I don't use Apple, I do the same as MikeBMW for AA and it also works with no issue...

Yes he's got the OEM setup and everything.  Nothing has changed on his truck since he's bought it other than floor mats.
