I did some Diff  maintenance today on my 2011 Silverado. One of the bolt wouldn't grab any threads on the frame. Any suggestions on how to tackle this problem?

I can get a picture in the morning. Its the rear bolt, driver side.

I haven't ever played with a Heli coil. I was dark when I finished couldn't tell if there was enough inside the frame for a Heli coil.

if its not deep enuff for a helicoil I would go to the next largest bolt and drill/ tap the hole for that bolt'. I believe those are 10-1.50 bolts so next size up would be 12mm. you may be able to go to a 7/16 self tapping bolt too

How about a drill out and a lock nut (with nylon) and bolt? You could use a nut plate if it's near the edge, it slips over the edge and holds it self in place with spring tension and sometimes little barbs, it's not for heavy duty applications though.

The Rivnut kit isn’t needed. The inserts can be installed with just a bolt, nut and washer.

1. Run the nut up onto the bolt

2. Slip the washer on the bolt

3. Screw the bolt into the rivet nut up to the washer and nut

4. Slip the rivet nut into the hole

5. Hold the bolt head with one wrench while  tightening the nut against the rivet nut. This will crush the rivet nut just like the special rivet nut tool will.

Rivnut is a brand name. Search for “rivet nut”.
