I have a ticking noise when cold started. Doesn’t happen every time. Goes away when the motor warms up more. No performance is affected just more of an annoyance. I initially thought maybe belts and pullies? Any advice?

Here’s a link for a reference of the sound.

Thanks in advance.

Says exhaust leak to me. When the pipes or flanges expand from the heat it goes away.

There are only a few main spots for leaks. The header flange at both exhaust manifolds to the cylinder head, the y-pipe connection at both exhaust headers and then the ball flange at the y-pipe to cat-back section.

You can look for broken exhaust bolts on the manifolds pretty easy. The other ones might require that you are under the truck on a cold start so you can hear/feel which side it's coming from and some soapy water. Spray the spots first pretty heavy and then fire it up, see where the bubbles come from.

Yup sounds like exhaust leak to me also and like what was said by Cameron take at a look at the exhaust manifold bolts bolted to the head it was an issue back then that they were breaking and causing exhaust leaks. Do the soapy water test also on a cold start.
