so I was plowing for the first time this season with my 98 k2500hd, 5.7, 4L80e and somehow the wiring harness to the transmission got wrapped up in the front driveshaft breaking all the wires coming down from the engine harness near the exhaust manifold. so rather than try to repair the spaghetti Im going to try and get a harness from the wrecking yard.my question is is the harness / connectors the same for 4L60e trans and any idea what years may fit. the transfer case harness is probably salvagable but will change it if I find 1. not looking forward to laying in the snow at the junkyard. also now I have trans fluid dripping from the round plug on the side of the trans. is that replaceable? probably cracked I'm guessing from having the connector ripped out of it

The best ways to find out what part will fit what vehicle, is .... Well probably to ask in this forum. Others may know the exact answer, but I do not. Here is what i can tell ya:

Once you find the part number for the part in question, then all you have to do is get the information from the donor vehicle, and ask one of these resources if the part number will fit the donor vehicle. If your part number doesn't work on the donor vehicle, then the donor vehicle's part will most likely not work on your rig.

Places that have parts compatibility programs:

    eBay

    Amazon

    Dealership

    Auto parts stores

I have not replaced a whole harness since the VW beetle days. I wonder if a replacement harness is or was available from the dealer. I guess that will be my first call Monday am. not gonna be easy to find if they do have a part # I bet. would be nice not to have to crawl around the wreckn yard in 10" snow and temps in the teens. the harness has had numerous repairs on the engine end of it so its time to just bite the bullet. I may be able to get the leaking connector from a trans shop. Ive been lookn to replace this truck but don't want to spend $10,000+ on a truck that's gonna get trashed picking up scrap metal.

In my part of the world, you can get a good truck for a couple grand. My buddy just sold his 1999 F150 (manual trans, 100k miles, clean inside and out) for $3K. It was a nice truck with no problems. It took a month to sell.

People spending $10K on a 20 year old pickup seems odd to me.

If you looking at spending that kinda scratch on a rusty turd, you might as well shop around and get something nice. You can fly across the country, stay in motels, ship via freight, and still come out way ahead. There are many places in the USA that you can get a good price on a rig.

Some websites will search all of Craigslist everywhere in the USA and automatically email the results every day, on what ever search criteria you select - and its all free.

the contractor I plow for has pretty good luck with municiple auctions, will try that CL thing. anyone out there know of a decent GM 2500- 3500 4wd pick up or rack truck for reasonable $ ?

I found 1 at a wrecking yard in Pennsylvania, $250 including shipping , not too bad I think. according to the part description on GMs site it 's 98 only, fits 4L60 +80 and all V8s. workn on the leak now, good thing I'm retired. should be just tired, will change the bed and fix the liftgate while I wait for delivery
