Gidday folks. 

I just bought a 007 Silverado, 4.3 V6, standard cab, 6 foot 6 box, 4 speed auto. About 110K miles.  Hand crank windows, no fancy electronic stuff. This is what I wanted. Decent fuel economy, and easy to park. I have found a list of common issues, like the distributor cap, and intake gaskets. I will buy a new cap and put it on. Any suggestions as to brand name and part number would help.

I am replacing the door speakers. One has quit, the other is squeaky. Found larger speakers and power amp behind the front seats. Not sure if stock or aftermarket.

A question about the 4 speed auto with an oil cooler. Is this a natural progression from the old Turbo 400, or a new and improved unit. Truck came with a new serpentine belt which was nice. My previous GM products were a 53 GMC panel van, straight six. A 68 GM heavy half 4 speed with a 307. A 78 Chev 3/4 ton 350 4 speed.

 

I will be looking for a rear canopy real soon. Maybe next year a trip to Tuktoyaktuk. Did not read if an intro was required, so hope this msg will do.   UK

Welcome ,the trans is new design more equivilant to the 700r4, all electronic. they seem to be more durable but still not bullet proof. as for dist cap does it even have a distributor?

Agree with Richard NAPA house brand parts are usually pretty good, there are other brands of course that are just fine as well. I would avoid distributor caps with aluminum terminals though; they seem to not last as long as the brass terminals.

Thank you men. I will pursue. I will have a good look at what is already under the hood. So far all I have done is look over the truck prior to purchase. Then I drove it home.  UK

I think you will like the 4.3.  I had one, '94 model.  Same as you.....roll up windows, nothing electric, 4sp trans.  A plain Jane as far as trucks go.  I did change trans a couple times in the 484,000 miles but never touched the engine.  When I sold it I had 484,000 miles on it.  I used 10w40 oil and a can of STP in every oil change.  And changed the filter.  Eventually I went to 20w-50 and STP.  Still ran the same, got the same 19mpg.  Heck of a good truck it was.  Now I have a 5.3 (to pull a heavier load) but I had no issues with the 4.3.....ever.

agreed 4.3 is bullet proof as you can get, its basicly the 5.0 small block with a couple cylinders chopped off

The amount of room to work on the front of the engine is impressive. I can envision replacing a water pump without scraping my knuckles on the radiator. My next look under the hood, will be to find a place to mount a battery tender. I usually only drive on four wheels during the winter months, so keep the battery plugged in over the summer.

 

My previous winter vehicle was a 006 Dodger Caravan. When I tow my heavier trailer, after a while the gear box talks to me. the Dodge also has a problem with broken front coil springs, which could easily leave me stranded. I want to go to Tuktoyaktuk. The Silverado will be a much better vehicle for the job. I also have a sailboat that weighs 3250 with the trailer. The van would suffer towing that.

 

New electronic stuff scares me more than older tech, bikes and trucks. Fuel injection and simple computer programs are okay. I have read a few other posts and noticed the informative info from Richard. Thank you.

I am on the BC mainland to pick up the Dodge. Next week I will be home on Gabriola Island BC.

it is a very easy truck to work on and the parts are cheap.  the fan ls quite a distance from the rad so the fan shroud is a crucial if you tow in warm weather. my local parts store had a few Astro vans with 4.3s that had close to 400k miles on them with kids driving them. very reliable power train! on the van I would put a set of quick struts in it if you keep it

    • I'm suborn like that Ed. There's a plaque in my doctor office that says, "Don't quit, take a break." Works for allot of things.    Reality is, the wife loves her SUV and even given it's issues, she'd buy another if she found one with low enough miles. Then again she has me to maintain it.    Most of what ails this thing is GM shooting themselves in the foot and by extension the buyer. Besides a ridiculous breather system the cat warm up strategy, IMHO, is the dumbest thing I've ever seen an OEM do to a vehicle they warranty. On cold start it r-e-t-a-r-d-s the ignition to like -17* ATDC and dump fuel like kicking over a pail to force combustion in the CAT's for rapid warm up. This literally hoses the oil off cylinder walls and creates enough varnish precursors to stick rings in even well maintained engines. THEN if that wasn't bad enough they recommend using a wanting fluid specification at equally stupid interval.    Common to all GDI motors I'm aware of is this silly practice of driving the HPFP off the cam giving a leaking pump direct and unchecked access to the crankcase. And sir, eventually the ALL leak. Your job is to "catch it if you can". Yes, these are the same people that removed dipsticks from engines and transmissions in belief Joe Average wasn't capable of checking, reading and maintain his own vehicles fluids. Sadly  and in large they were correct. Most people these days can't tell a sparkplug from a fire plug.  Great ideas one and all.    Every move and every error calculated to defend themselves from the law and their own customers.       
    • Most online suppliers and Amazon. All have noted "not for use with Bose speakers".
    • Very interesting thread. Definitely didn’t expect to see this kind of mileage out of that engine. 
    • Just did an injector/HPFP replacement on Pepper at 192,400 miles; close enough to 200K, RIGHT? (If 200K is considered life end and to me it isn't). But hey, to each his own.    Have never run a catch can on this vehicle. Back side of every valve looked like a new valve spray painted semigloss black. Port walls looked 'neat' (all a normal result of passive EGR via VVT) Zero build up even in AFM cylinders. Just color. It uses no measurable oil and never has.    At 155,000 I put her on E-85 and a borescope of the cylinders at plug change showed very clean pistons and valve faces. The replaced injector tips looked new. (It was the pump piston seal that was leaking). Oh well, have six good backups.    Still gets 28 mpg on gas (highway average) and over 20 (highway) on alky. UOA's look good and runs as good now as it did when I bought it. Better in fact.    What improvement would a Catch Can provide this motor?     And given all this I expect that IF I installed one I'd see some water/gas/oil vapor accumulation. Byproducts of normal combustion.   Having said that, IF my motor used an appreciable amount of oil I'd consider it a useful 'crutch' until I had the situation corrected OR if bore polished, until I junked it or rebuilt it to stave off repeated plug fouling.    I'm not telling you what I THINK. But what its DONE.          
    • Love the look. I'm a SCSB lover myself.    Two items. 1.) A spacer changes scrub radius but this also changes when we use wheels of different offsets. A little isn't a big deal. 2.) Steel wheels, alloy wheels all have different thickness. Same effect on the stud and lug nut as a spacer. When hub centric the wheel isn't supported by the stud. It's supported by the hub. The stud just keeps it all together.
