BFG AT or Goodyear ATS

I'm tired of looking at the puny 245's on my truck and am going to replace them soon with a set of 265's. Does anyone have pictures of a 2500HD with 265 BFG AT-KO's on it? Any thoughts/recommendations on going with the BFG's vs. the Goodyear AT/S? Don't really do any off-roading, truck is 4wd but mostly just used to haul a boat around. Thanks!

I have a buddy with a tahoe that had a couple sets of the BFGs and said they were too noisy. He just got a set of the goodyears and he is much happier with them. I thought they looked great and performed awesome in the snow. He said they were noticeably quieter. I am in the same boat as you. When my 245s are toast, I am upgrading tires(maybe with a lift) and will probably go with the goodyears.

had gy ats and am considering bfgs. look at tirerack.com for all the survey info bfg wins hands down. the gy has a good $ for value. the cheapest place i have seen bfg is at sams club and discount tire.

the white outlined lettering on my gy ats's rubbed off after a few months and wear was fast at first but slowed after a few months too. also the ats's were a pain to balance. i had them balanced every oil change and still had vibration around 60-70 mph.

if you have the $$$ go with bfg. otherwise gy would be my second choice.

I've always used the BFGs and like their look but not the noise.

My wheel/tire shop just got the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO's and claim that they are just as good as the GY and BFGs but much quieter.

I like the styling and tread pattern. Pricing is also very close to the BFGs so I plan to upgrade to these in 265s once my factory 245s bite the dust.

Here's a write-up and consumer rating I found:

You'll enjoy the Revo's

Believe it or not I have always seen the BFG's cheaper at cosco (Price Club) they were cheaper than 4wheelparts and everywhere else i have looked. if there is a cosco near you or anything try them or their website.

I have the 285 BFG ATs on my 2000 1500 GMC and really like them. They have very little road noise (if any at all).

My only beef is the mileage - they aren't getting the mileage of non-at tires which is what I may need.

With the HD get the 285s - they fill in the GM-gaps nicely

I have 285/75/r16 BFG AT-Kos on my 03 GMC HD with the front torsion bars turned and I couldnt be happier with the setup. Everyone that sees the truck asks if its been lifted and what I did to get it up in the air. This is the second set of bfgs I have owend and I have never had any trouble with them. The noise issue only comes up when the tires arent balanced. I have seen people get as much as 70k miles out of a set of these tires, for an agressive tread thats awesome... imo.

Since you tow, the BFG's will be better because they have three-ply sidewalls.

The Goodyear ATS sidewalls are pretty lightly constructed, they are better for ride because they flex more.

I haven't owned the BFG's but that's what I'm going to when my ATS's wear out. Most people I know that have had them were totally happy. The Goodyears do make noise on certain types of pavement. With both tires being AT's, I really don't believe there will be a significant difference in the amount of road noise generated.

I've had both in a 31/10.5/15 on my old s-10. I perfered the Goodyears. I felt like they gave me better traction, especially in the rain. I also think they were a nicer looking and riding tire. I got about 45K miles out of the GYs and 55K out of the BFGs. Both set had thread left when I got rid of them. Both sets starting to crack. The only reason why I had the BFGs longer was I couldn't afford to replace them when they needed to be.

By you sig I am still assuming that you have the factory AT/S's. They are a "P" series tire, that is why they have the soft sidewall. I have owned 2 sets of AT/S's and 1 set of MT/Rs all LT's and have been very happy with them. I also noticed that the tread pattern is different between the P and LT series at least in the 265/70/17, the P series is has tighter grooves to quiet them, where the LT's are more open and aggressive.

My first set of AT/Ss I got a little over 30,000 miles and I drove them hard, then put the Mt/Rs on and put about 15,000 on them before I traded the truck off. I just put a sset of LT 265/70/17 load range C on my Tahoe this fall, also looked at teh BFG's but didnt want to spend the $55 per tire extra.

In my opinion a P series tire should never be put on a 1/2 ton truck or SUV.

If you're looking at AT tires make sure you check out the Nitto Terra Grapplers too. IMO they're the best AT-style of tire that you can get. Highly recommended.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
