Here is the latest UOA on my daughters 2023 Kia Sportage.  

Kia oil filter.

Kia air filter with 5k miles on it.

AMSOIL Signature Series 0w-20, 6qts 8oz.

Raven at 35K...Final answer

 I would not have know this detail if I had not also run a UAO on Pepper from the same batch (case). Note the change in TBN chemistry? Now look at the oxidation? In Pepper, which shows no fuels, that value is 62. At minimum a 30 point spread assuming no elevation from base in Peppers sample which is silly to believe. 

 

When this sample was first run the attending paperwork which is attached to the outside of the pouch went MIA during mailing so the sample was run anyway but the Protocol is to run it as a Diesel motor oil sample. This has an impact on how the fuels is reported. 

 

A gasoline motor whose 100 C viscosity has dropped less than 1 cSt from the SAE grade mid point is reported as a fuels 'Estimate' of <1% and not actually run. For a diesel motor that threshold for actually running the GC is still 1 cSt but the 'Estimate" report is <2% and thus the original sample was so labeled and why not flagged! 

 

Elevated iron and aluminum from the trend along with this 2% estimate had me asking questions and the first run at it got the response of explaining the protocol. The tech then went the next step and actually ran the GC which in deed and fact was higher than 2%....just...but higher. 

 

Interestingly enough the viscosity trending in accompaniment with my detailed fuel logs show the point the injectors took a hike. During the miles accumulated to generate test #6 or two samples after the fact. 

 

Doing a Red Line SI-1 injector service currently. I will request the GC be run on the next sample regardless of viscosity result. If the service works, fine, I leaned something. Several somethings. If not then the injectors get replaced. 

 

This is a MPFI motor, not GDI and this motor from my first tank has seen only Shell V Power Nitro + fuel which has a boatload of detergents in it all ready. 3X the levels of Top Tier Fuel. (So the adverts say). 

 

I'm still in conversations with OA and getting positive movement. @Black02Silverado supplied the contacts and took the initial lead. I'm very happy with Nick and the lab at this point and now more educated about the labs protocols.

 

I will set my own internal markers for viscosity reduction and improved fuel system maintenance. And tickled pink I chose to use the Mirage "Home Market' oil "weight' grade and not the North America 0W20 SAE SP, ILSAC GF-6A spec oil.

 

There is nothing in my Mitsubishi Manual that mentions anything about routine injector service, chemical or otherwise.

How many times have you changed the air filter? Exactly when at what mileage? 
I have a hard time believing injectors are an issue at this mileage.

2.) 22,458 NAPA 200125

3.) 36,796 NAPA 200125

Spring, summer and fall I do. In the winters I run lower dose blends to help starting; reduce moisture and give me a chance to do a chemical injector service (Techron, Red Line SI-1, AMSOIL, Gumout treatment etc.) I just did the winter swap this week running out the tank in a trip down state. She doesn't see many winter miles with the salt and all. So yes, for all practical purposes Pepper is an E-85 motor.

Got around to this job today. And as I had one changed the air filter...again :)

 

The PCV is horizontally mounted and is a simple shuttle absent a spring. Clean as a whistle and free. Hit it with some starter fluid anyway, greased the "O" ring and reinstalled. Plastic body and shuttle. Plastic rocker box. No torque spec so hand snug. 36,991 miles.

If there is nothing obvious and we know the lab rats are calibrating GC to gasoline not diesel fuel then.....

 

Its not air filter loading for sure .... changed as often as you have. 

 

Pull plugs look for less than stellar burn.  That should he easy to check. Check for corrosion at contacts. 

 

I suspect coil-over/s may have gone south partially on all. 

 

That's just odd to go < 1% fuel and perfect NOx readings then get 2% all the sudden and 13 Nitration probably didn't even kill its MPG because ECM is compensating. 

 

Hope you nail it, I love this engine. SIMPLE

Just spit balling here but as all previous samples were estimates and all <1%....

And this one was as well AFTER the paperwork was resubmitted I'd bet fuels has been above 1% for quite some time. 

Can't quite get the tech to see that for whatever reason. I didn't quit nagging so she eventually reran it. 

 

So initial was <2% (based on no paperwork and default Diesel Protocol), then revised to <1% (based on Gasoline Protocol and < 1cSt viscosity reduction) ...then actually run at 2.1% :crackup:

 

It was the first OCI at 5K miles (up from 3,500 - 3,750 miles) I check oil every gas fill and up to 4K nothing looked any different than usual. That last 1K miles got much darker. I know color isn't a final indicator but I use it like one would use white snot or bubbles or thin black inky/stinky to get a quite heads up on those other issues. Yes, Nox caught my attention. Broke trend. 

 

One thing that does not work in this motors favor is the fact it is so efficient that it is hard to keep hot unless you are doing long highway runs. The thermostat is fine. Just it's nature to be cold blooded. Like a Honda Civic HX. You could burn a tank of gas in the DY5 motors and never get the thermostat to open. Start driving and on the money. Another very efficient motor. Little waste heat.

Great input. Do you think the cold snap you got recently hammered the test trends? 
 

Using slightly more viscous lubes will

hold some heat in. 
 

Im gonna be testing a new additive formula Valvoline is using in VR1 straight 30.

Hey Grump how dirty or moist - damp are the used air filters in your area?

    • Your tire pressure issue may just be batteries, you can reset them using tge Ing switch (I think) and the owner's  manual. ChatGTP will b e a faster, better help than Google.
    • The thinking is that starting out in a higher gear makes it easier to avoid applying excessive torque when pressing the gas pedal. In a modern 4wd truck with 4 low and a limited slip or locking rear end, I would use 4 low and try to crawl up the ramp. Sometimes if they are too slippery, you have to back up to let the boat have some bouyancy, and then accelerate briskly to get some momentum to help you pull the through the slippery parts. 
    • I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.     
    • Thanks to the convenience of Amazon, I was able to get a few things done to the truck today.  I installed Carquest Premium oil and air filters with five quarts of Mobil1 High Mileage 10-30 along with a quart of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 I already had.  The latch for the flip up center console lid was broken so I replaced it along with the power mirror switch.  I found my push retainer assortment this morning and reattached the plastic under the bumper and it was only held on with a few screws and retainers.  Then I programmed a new remote keyless entry fob so I can lock my dog in the truck when I take her out with me (I've got to keep the air going for her since it's been in the 100s).  Finally, I ordered some LED interior bulbs and replaced the reading lamps.  The front lights are working fine while one of the back lights only works intermittently and the other not at all.   While under the truck, I found the source of at least one of the noises: the sway bar links need replacing.  I ordered a set of Suspension Dudes links with Code Red bushings.  Never heard of them, but they're made in the USA and have decent reviews.  While making yet another Amazon order, I went ahead and added a set of front tow hooks.  I went with red, since that's the color of the sway bar link and bushings and it should look decent enough on a black and chrome truck.  Speaking of which, it doesn't bug me much, but the passenger side mirror has a chrome cap while the driver side doesn't, so eventually I'll make them match one way or another.  Oh, and I ordered a $20 TPMS reset tool.  No idea if it will do anything for my sensors but it was cheap and will work for the Ford Transit Connect as well.     For tradition's sake, I ordered a new oil change wrench.  I kept the Snap-On 9/16"x15mm GM wrench I bought when I was 18 in the 2006 GMC from the time I bought that truck until the truck was lost.  While I was tempted, there's no need to spend $80 for a new SO wrench, or even $50 with shipping for a used one on Ebay.  I just bought a Duratech 15mm extra-long ratcheting wrench to do the job as needed.  It works, and if I like that wrench enough, I'll buy the set.  
    • The recall is for exactly this issue - those drain holes combined with the limited environmental capability of the tailgate electronics card inside the tailgate were a problem. The “safety issue” was the potential for the tailgate to spontaneously open, but all kinds of tailgate misbehavior can occur from water contamination of that control card.    There is no real fix yet. The initial recall just disabled the tailgate. Later, when parts became available, they would replace bad parts with new parts of the same bad design. My dealer is going nuts because the few times I let them get their hands on my truck, my tailgate is off due to a slide-in camper installation. They really want to cut my tailgate wires, but I won’t give them the chance. I will let them get their dirty hands on it when a real fix (redesign) is available.  My tailgate, which works just fine with sealant plugging the drain holes, will remain safe in a dry storage crate until then.
