I have a 2009 Silverado with the turn button select auto 4x4, just recently I’ve had problems with the 4x4. The truck is perfectly fine in 2nd drive no sounds, drives fine all is good, when I put it into 4x4 high or low I feel a lot of resistance and you can hear whining and noise, the second you select 2wd you can feel the resistant release and noise gone. I’ve got 2 shops look over the truck, they both have deamed it to be in the transfer case.

im guessing a bearing is gone or something. A reman is over $2000 cad, brand new from GM is $2300 cad, so obvs I’d go brand new over reman for the price. Shops rebuilding want $1200-$1800 but all are sketchy on warranty… So I’m lost now, I want to try to rebuild it myself it’s about $300 for the bearing and seal kit from rock auto, follow a parts blow up and manual and slowly take my time to rebuild it, watching videos doesn’t seem too bad.

what’s everyone’s thoughts? How is Rebuilt transfer cases if you have a good mechanical back ground ? How is it?

thanks!

They are not complicated at all.  As long as you can physically do the work and have watched the videos it's easy peasy.  Precision Transmission on Youtube has lots of MP3023 (yours and mine) teardown videos with lots of advice and how tos in them.

Now, just to be sure, did you engage 4x4 on pavement or off-road?  No 4x4 likes to turn on roads, especially parking lots.

There was a software update way back when these were new that got rid of chain noise and slop, not sure if this applies to you or you want to go through the motions of a software update.

it's not a hard job if you are mechanicaly inclined and have a good set of tools. you don't really need much for special tools other than snapring pliers, bearing/seal drivers and a bench for teardown/ rebuild. there's another thread from today/ yest on the same subject

I will check them out!

This is on pavement, but I understand what you mean. No 4x4 likes to do turns on pavement, but it’s just idling along with little gas going straight you can just hear it but the resistance you known it’s not right

Yeah I’m thinking of tackling it myself, doesn’t seem too bad at all

Good man!  Keep us posted and consider taking photos/video and doing a tutorial if you are so inclined.

I installed a oil pump thing that kept the oil pump from wearing a hole in the case, I got it at https://www.merchant-automotive.com/. They have a lot to offer T case needs. While inside my T case i wanted to replace all the seals because it had a lot of miles on it, I wanted the reliability of new seals and i wanted the experience. One look at the BIG seal and I chickened out. That's going to take a big seal driver, it just spooked me. As my ex bought the truck it's now NOT MY PROBLEM! Yay!
