2022 Silverado 2500HD Duramax Transmission Temp High with Normal Driving, Not Towing

Recommended Posts

Update: I just got off of the phone with the dealership and they have received the valve body for my truck. I will be dropping it off in the morning to have it installed. I will update once I have had a chance to drive it and see if fixes the transmission temperature issue. This has been a long frustrating 4 months, let's hope this is the fix!

UPDATE.....I picked up my truck yesterday afternoon after having the transmission valve body replaced and it looks like that did the trick. The transmission temp got as high as 142 yesterday and even went down to 138 at one point. I am excited, I feel like I finally have the new truck I ordered after having it for 4 months. I hope this is the fix for the others on here having similar issues. If anything changes I will post another update.

That's awesome news!  I'm still waiting on the valve body to arrive and hope to have my truck back soon!  Thanks again for posting and sharing.

Update...I just called again to check the status of the valve body part that has been on back order for my truck.  My truck has been parked at the GMC dealership service department since 10/13/2022.  I finally have an ETA date of 11/30/2022 for the part to arrive.  Hopefully the part will arrive at the end of the month and that it will resolve the issue!  I'll provide another update the first part of December.

Update...the dealership received the replacement valve body for my new 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali.  They got it installed and I picked up my truck on 12/1/22 and have not had any more problems so far.  The highest temperature that I've seen the transmission fluid reach so far is around 155 degrees.  I have yet to tow anything but the temperature was reaching around 256 degrees before and without towing anything.  Yay!

Hello. I have the same exact issue going on with my 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4. My truck has about 5200 miles. I towed for the very first time last week and my transmission overheated on me. A message popped up on the dash saying transmission to hot idle engine. Took the truck in the shop 3 days ago. They said my transmission valve body needs to be replaced. Thanks to this forum I was able to communicate with the shop mechanic and get it properly diagnosed without having to go back and forth. I did In fact call GM and asked about a loaner/rental truck. And they told me that I would have to pay for it up front and then get reimbursed for it after repairs are done. First of all that’s very unfair, if my truck is in the shop for 2-3 months bc of a back ordered part. You shouldn’t expect your customers to pay for a rental vehicle for 3 months and then wait to get reimbursed. It gets expensive. And it’s GM responsibility to make it right bc it’s a faulty part on their vehicle they manufactured. So I’m kinda pissed off about that part and will continue to push for them to cover the cost upfront or I’ll just have to go straight to the BBB.

I agree, this forum was so helpful in identifying the issue, even though the mechanics wouldn’t take my word for it in the beginning and took several days to finally replicate the problem. Kudos to my dealership though for providing me with a rental car throughout the whole ordeal and never having to pay a dime upfront. Best of luck!

Picked up my brand new truck on 7/9/22 with 8 miles on it. Drove it that day, normal conservative driving on pretty flat roads. Outside temperature that day was around 100 degrees. At about 30 miles on the odometer, the clutch fan kicks in which was pretty loud. Engine temp was at 210, no problem. At that time I didn't know how to pull up the transmission temp so I don't know what it was. I drove straight home and when backing into the garage I hear the dash dinging and I see "Transmission Hot Idle Engine" warning which I found out will appear if the Trans temp reaches 260 for 5 seconds or more. Took it in, they couldn't replicate the issue or find any problems. The next weekend I had about 120 mile trip (not towing) with mostly flat driving and the trans temp reached 232. My brother in his 2020 Silverado 2500HD Duramax was double towing (5th wheel and Razor) up large hills got up to 160-175 degrees. I'm frustrated and hesitant to tow anything with the way my truck is acting. The service department acts puzzled and not sure what to do. It is actually there right now being looked at. Wondered if anyone else has experienced these kind of issues or has any ideas.

My truck is doing the same thing it’s a 2021 Silverado v8 5.3 any information would help me out too !! TIA

Having the same issue with my 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country 2500hd. I bought the truck used in Oct 2023, the truck only had 7500 miles but had a great price. Occasionally it shifts hard, sometimes it seems like it's not sure what gear it should be in, kind of like a false neutral. The transmission has overheated while towing and when not towing. Kind of a random thing that doesn't always happen. Dealership told me that changing the transmission fluid and filters is the first step so I paid to have that done. Needless to say it didn't fix it, and they didn't put down any info on the RO as to why I had the transmission service done. I took the truck back after the same problems occurred, I took with me the service bulletin and gave it to the service people. They had never heard of the issue, I had to pay for a diagnostic fee, and of course there are no codes or anything to show any issues. I showed them a pic of the transmission fluid temperature of 250 degrees and their tech says that is normal operating temperature. He took it for a drive and couldn't replicate the problem, I asked if he had checked the transmission cooler lines per the service bulletin and was told he didn't find any leaks, nothing about the condition of the lines. This is why I hate stealerships like this.

D Fowers - if you are still on this forum please tell me which dealership in Utah you went to, I'm also in Utah.

Pinched or twisted line, or, the TBV in the valve body is stuck.  Its a warranty issue, they should have never taken your money for changing the fluid.

Find another dealer.

Definitely time to find a competent dealer. That story got worse the longer I read it.  Can you share the number of the TSB ?

The TSB is #22-NA-182, it was last updated in Aug of 2023 to include 2024 vehicles as well. I sent a PM to the OP hoping that he would respond as to which dealership handled his truck repair. I live in Northern Utah east of Ogden if anyone could recommend a competent service department. GM has had this problem since 2021, but not on many vehicles, seems to be a random thing. I uploaded the TSB hopefully you all can see it. Thanks

Hi Folks, it has been a little alarming to read the stories above, both from the technical view of the hardware reliability and design issues, and also from the dealership/GM and ethics view.

It is one thing to release a transmission design and discover issues in the wild, but how they have been handled is another. Folks are paying ridiculously high prices, and most of us make payments monthly. Expecting to have one of these fixed in a timely way isn't being unfair to the dealers or GM, but expecting folks wait for weeks while making payments is alarming.

I stumbled into this forum while researching to find out if the owner's manual maintenance schedule is an error, and started looking into that when I discovered how tangled the issues with transfer case fluid and axles were in the owner's manual. It is very disappointing to say the least. So I then wondered about the transmission....

I am coming up 47k miles and saw in some places that I am to change the transfer case fluid. Well enough there was no real problems there, but then it made me wonder where and when the axles and trans fluid would be by comparison.

I won't go down the rabbit hole with why did GM skip the drain plugs on the axles for the moment. That is sad to see since the bosses in those cases where drain plugs should have been still exist.

Can anyone say why the regular schedule versus severe schedule goes from no mention to service trans fluid/filter at all versus doing this at 45k mi for severe? How can there be no mention at all for the regular schedule for over 150k miles, yet only 45k mi for severe? Sounds like something is missing in the "normal" service schedule?

What does GM really want for fluid/filter change interval on these 10 speed transmissions? Why omit the dipstick? Why is there such a huge difference from "normal" to "severe" and can we trust the owner's manual? Why omit a drain plug and fill capability to make testing fluid an option to see if a user is "normal" or "severe" and avoid failures?
