Hey everyone,

I have a 2015 silverado 1500 2wd with about 100000 miles on it. I want to do a twin turbo kit, i only was thinking of pushing 5-6 pounds of boost, just because i’m not going crazy yet. just want the cosmetics of the turbo in the engine bay, the quick spool up, the added power, and of course the sound. The guys on PerformanceTrucks.net have more experience with boost and go fast mods. Should ask on that forum.

 

IMO get a 4wd truck, you will have trouble hooking up. At least get traction bars and race tires. 6L80 will handle the power for a while, you can get aftermarket parts to beef it up, but it won’t be cheap. Stock driveshaft is a weak link. Do an AFM delete with LS7 lifters and get the revised oil pump. Just a few things off the top of my head.

The transmission can handle an easy 500-600hp if you are nice to it and the transmission/engine tune is spot on.

 

Things like heavy ass aftermarket rims and tires along with a lift kit will put more stress on the driveline, so you need to keep that in mind. The transmission won't want to take as much abuse if it's doing more to get it moving. The factory driveshaft needs to go, it's a weak link and the factory G80 rear locker doesn't like a ton of abuse either.

 

Traction bars for sure.

Depends on how much power you’re after. Like the 2 post above me said, G80 and driveshaft will let go pretty quick. Trans if it’s healthy, with the right tuner, it’ll hold 700-750. I was beating on mine for 2 years at about 580 and turn turn up to 750-800 and it STARTED to slip 4th. You’ll need injectors, HPFP and in tank pump if you wanna do E85 or any decent amount of power. Stock injectors will probably limit you to about mid-high 400. Depends on dyno and the whole setup. Stock engine can probably handle 600 if it’s tuned right. 
 

P.S. blowers are more fun at lower power level. Makes it feel more alive. INSTANT TQ

I’ve had two super charged trucks. The first was a Ford with a vortec. It was a factory oil user they called normal. At 20K miles the vortec went on at 5lbs boost. I traded in at 120K miles, normal maintenance. The second was a Chevy that a whipple from new. It had 5lbs boost and shift kit. At 80K started using oil. It got stroked modified 30K miles later the transmission got beefed while being rebuilt. I owned it after that for 12 years just doing maintenance. Most diesels and gas I’ve owned have been modified. My secret to longevity with my vehicles not constantly mashing the throttle at take off. Id always leave the tires stock except my toys. Useless burn outs and constant full throttle from take off prematurely wears them out, obviously. Knowing I was the most likely winner at the stop light drags was better that taking the risk. I was usually in competition with my brothers for bragging rights. Didn’t care about the rest. The sensation of speed was my drug of choice. I’m still addicted.

I was addicted to speed also Karnut. Went to motorcycles for my fix, a long time ago.

I had dirt bikes. Lots of dirt pits and dirt roads in New Jersey. My wife hated murder cycles she called them. Her father wiped a scooter overseas. Was all scraped up. That and I knew no one to street ride with. She was ok with drag racing. The compromise.

What trans parts would you recommend building up? My trans literally just blew and i’m buying a new stock trans. It was abused by my brother when he was towing 24/7 so it’ll be nice to start with a fresh slate. Was thinking aftermarket torque converter since that may be a weak link, what do you think?

Ouch, that sucks! Get a torque converter for sure, and do the pill flip. Sonnax makes a kit that replaces the crappy factory stuff. I have a stock 8L90 that has been tuned, and have 520 hp/540 tq going through it. So far so good. 
 

I’m not an expert on transmissions. There are a few guys on here that have experience with them. GrumpyBear, Black02Silverado, and CajunFries all have beefed up their 6L80’s. Search the forum for trans threads or DM one of them

Depends on your power level goal. If you’re going to make 600-650, stock trans is perfectly fine. Few things I would do tho. 1. Make sure your current trans cooler gets professionally flushed out. 2. Add an aftermarket trans cooler ADDITION to the stock one. 3. Flip the thermostat pill like SeekandDestroy said. 4. Upgrade the converter to a minimum 6L90 converter. Or jump into something from Circle D. Single disk is perfectly fine if your tuner doesn’t lock up in WOT. And the most important part after doing all that…. Make sure you get a tuner that knows how to tune these trucks!!!!!!

honestly i’m only looking for 550-575 at the crank. Not going too overboard since it’s a daily. Probably going to boost it but very lightly just to reach my power goal. that way it’s still manageable and i don’t risk everything in the truck under one pull. I’m definitely doing to do the thermostat pill, and probably cooler as well.

what do you have done to your truck? 520hp is definitely around my

power goal. would love to know how it has been treating you.

It’s a 6.2L with a BTR 220 cam, headers, CAI, throttle body, custom dual exhaust, and a good tune. 

 

Really fun to drive. Have to launch in 4wd or it will just burn rubber. Will break the tires loose if I floor it under 50 km/hr. Chirps the tires shifting into 4th at 100. I have sticky summer tires and the “best” winter tires. It needs traction bars if I increase the power more

Even at 550 at the wheels is easy. I was DD mine for about 2 years at 560+ beating the crap out of it any chance I get and it was perfectly fine. Just make sure you use the right tuner that know what they are doing. A lot of trucks don’t run right or last long because of the tuner. Goodluck! Ask away if you got any questions.

So currently I just got a new stock trans, which they installed and was broken out of the factory.. Which is bad because that was the last 6L80e in the state so i was looking at the Supermatic 6L80e. I can currently only find it for LS motors, i am not sure what would need to be changed to pair it with GEN V LT. Or if there are better options, but that seemed good for my price range and considering we are close with the GM parts dealer in our town. I would appreciate any help

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
