Does anyone know how to shift the electronic shifter in the refresh from park to neutral with the engine off? I was just trying to move my truck slightly this weekend and let it roll down a hill without turning the truck on and the system will not let the transmission shift out of park without the engine running. The DIC message displayed was something like "Conditions not correct for shift."

At the time I just turned the truck on and moved it but it got me thinking, if something happens on the road or a parking lot where the engine will not start. How am I supposed to push the truck off the road or get it onto a tow truck? I did try it in full power accessory mode and still not bueno.

Engine needs to be running to put the truck in neutral.  The only way to do it with the engine off is with a GM dealer special tool that is installed directly to the transmission shift lever.  Electronic shift vehicles (ETRS) require hydraulic pressure to release the park mechanism so the engine must be running.

Neutral service position can be used if truly needed.  Take note of the first step, engine running:

Engine Off – Driver in Vehicle

  1. Ignition ON — Engine Running.
  2. Apply the brake pedal.
  3. Shift to Neutral.
  4. Release Parking Brake.
  5. Turn off the engine and release the brake pedal.
  6. The indicator should continue to show N. If it does not, repeat steps 2–4.
  7. Vehicle is now in Neutral Service Mode.

Engine Off – Driver out of Vehicle

  1. Ignition ON — Engine Running.
  2. Apply the brake pedal.
  3. Open the door.
  4. Shift to Neutral.
  5. Release Parking Brake.
  6. Turn off the engine and release the brake pedal.
  7. The indicator should continue to show N. If it does not, repeat steps 2–5.
  8. Exit the vehicle and close the door. Vehicle is now in Neutral Service Mode.

Note: The vehicle may automatically shift to Park upon re-entry.

Don't know if this will work for you, but for my 2020 with column gear selector, I can put in neutral without engine running like this: Push and hold start button for 10 seconds, *without* foot on brake pedal, (have fob with you) and then, after all the beeping stops, push on brake pedal and truck will let me manually select gear/neutral. That being said, there is a special procedure to flat tow truck in neutral. Hope this helps you.
