Hey everyone, we noticed this question comes up a lot, so we finally put together one master cheat sheet. It covers the exact oil capacity, filter numbers, and drain plug torques for every GM truck and SUV from 2016 through 2026. Bookmark the full guide here so you never have to guess again: https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-engine-oil-capacity-guide/

Hi all.

I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 LD (old body style) with a 5.3L with a little over 63,000 miles on it.

My manual says 8 qts of 0W-20 however when I fill it with the 8qts it’s way over the line. The first time I changed the oil I read every article and forum post to make sure I wasn’t wrong and 8qts seems to be right.

I started to notice a pretty bad oil leak from the back of the upper pan and from what I’m reading that could be a rear main seal.

So my questions are has anyone else experienced this level of leaking for what I think is so early? Is 8qts too much? Could I have the wrong dipstick (V6?)?

Thanks all.

5.3L 'way over' with 8 qts suggests that it wasn't fully drained.

(one of the reasons it's common to check level to determine how much of the last bottle is required.)

I'd prefer to be a 1/2 qt below full (so middle of acceptable range) rather than 1/2 qt above full

I don't know how to check it, but it's possible it has the wrong dipstick or the wrong dipstick tube....

Im just a guy at home doing normal services. Not saying I’m a professional mechanic.

It definitely comes down to a slow drip and the cap and filter is off. Does the pan hold a little bit of oil? Every other vehicle I’ve had the book was always right on with what was needed to added.

If you're buying the oil in jugs instead of individual quarts, make sure they are 4 quart (gallon) jugs instead of 5 quart jugs. 2 x 5 qt jugs would of course be overfull. Local stores here sell both sizes, may depend on brand and viscosity.

Valvoline Synthetic. 5qt jug + 3 1qt bottles = 8qts.

I keep a plastic measuring cup in the garage as it's cheaper to buy 5 qt. jugs. Still have 6 qt. motors in my care which always needed the additional qt. and now with the new 6.2 in my care I just use the measuring cup to make up the additional quarts.

Don't' forget to run it to fill the new filter up before checking level.

As long as the level is between the add and full it's fine. Some dipsticks vary among engines, I see this in the 3 3.6 motors I maintain so don't obsess with being at the full mark.

Don't forget that it takes quite a while for the oil to drain back to the pan for an accurate reading.

Especially cold oil.
