I use foaming window cleaner on wheels, chrome or not. I used Mother's chrome polish in the past. Now, I used Cerakote on the paint and wheels. Pretty happy with the stuff.

High initial maintenance but low long term maintenance?  Ceramic coating.

Nothing wrong with the car soap/water approach (w/o coating the wheels), but you got to stay on top of it unless you are coated.  If you coat the wheels, soap and water is all you'd ever need for the most part.

If they get grubby go to has been Adams.  They have their Eco Wheel cleaner which is safe on all wheel finishes.  Adam's Aftermarket & Delicate Wheel Cleaning Basic Kit - Adam's Polishes (adamspolishes.com)

Or if you want something stronger that is also safe on all finishes and is also an all in one wheel and tire, they also have a Wheel and Tire spray.  Adam's Wheel & Tire Brush Complete Kit - Adam's Polishes (adamspolishes.com)

Linked the kits in case you don't have good brushes, but you can obviously just get the chemicals if that's all you need.

Just keep a good coating of ceramic's on them. I use Turtle wax stuff. I kept the chromies on my old '11 Tahoe looking good for 150k miles until I traded it in for the Silverado. And that was with heavy salt zone driving also.
