My first year of driving was unique because I drove lots of miles. My father had a large construction site prep business. I went to school half day. After school I ran parts for the mechanics. In 1974 you wanted it you drove to get it. I worked from 12 to 16 years old on a farm and saved for my first car. It was a 1973 RX3. First 2 weeks of driving I got 2 speeding tickets 10 points on a 12 point system. Now days in New Jersey they take your license. First 4K miles the tires were wore out and replaced. I raced every thing that moved. Generally won. The fools with their 1/4 mile prep cars would race top end. I could cut a good light. Most of the time they couldn’t hook up. By the time they get close they max out. I didn’t. She’d go 130 before it got real lite. Six months in I blew the transmission. Apparently you shouldn’t flat shift all the time. Shortly after blew the rear. Evidently you can’t spin on the ice 130 Mph uphill sitting still. My spider gears wanted out. Near the end of the first year the car at 60K miles was spent. I traded it in for a 74 barracuda and met my future wife. That slowed me a little. I still modified the barracuda. Started going to Atco instead of street racing.
