Cooling question concerning MAX Towing Package RPO Code "NHT"

My '17 Silverado Doble Door LTZ with the 5.3L V8 && 6L80 transmission, came equipped with the MAX Towing Package RPO Code NHT which includes (9.76 rear axle, Trailer brake controller, enhanced cooling radiator)

Can anyone explain to me what the "ENHANCED COOLING Radiator" is with this option? Does it have additional cooling for the transmission? It also has the KC4 'Engine oil cooling system', which I'll assume is a separate oil cooling radiator unit in front of the radiator.

 

I have done the 'pill flip' & the transmission usually runs cool at 110 to 140F, depending on ambient temp & length of driving. When the truck is up to temperature, st below the 210F mark, when I check it with TORQUE LITE, it reads about 180-190F

 

I appreciate any info you can share.

Yes, extra transmission cooling. Primary drivers side tank of the radiator then to a cooler that is the top half of the AC condenser. @newdude will correct me if I remember his posts incorrectly. :) It changed a few times over the K2 run.  But either way, yes, NHT, extra cooling for the transmission. 

 

Your oil cooler is in the passenger side tank of the radiator.

Your oil cooler is in the passenger side tank of the radiator. 

 

 

Anythinga after early 2016 they don't go through the radiator anymore on the V8.  NHT does have a larger radiator, but the transmission cooler is just the one in the top of the condenser.

All the engines in the K2s have the KC4 oil cooler.

 

NHT gets a larger radiator.

 

Transmission has no additional cooling.

6 speed 5.3 transmission cooler line diagram for late 2016 to 2019 old body.  Note the lines do not connect to the radiator, just to the transmission cooler at the top of the AC condenser.  This is for both non NHT and NHT trucks, same setup.

Thanks Newdude & Grumpy for the reply & information. Please let me summarize what I believe you taught me on this post.

1. The "NHT" option is ONLY for a higher cooling capacity radiator than standard, and it only cools the coolant and also acts as an engine oil cooler. No transmission fluid goes through the radiator.

2. The A/C condenser also has a separate cooling section for the ATF on the top section of the A/C condenser. This is new to me. In the past ('96 C/K) I always saw a separate oil cooler that would sit in front of the A/C condenser. Also, I always thought the Transmission was heated & cooled from the cooling lines in the side panels of the radiator.

This means the transmission fluid is only cooled & any temperature increase comes from the internal workings of the torque converter & clutches. (Maybe some heat from the A/C condenser if the A/C is turned on)

This old man has learned a lot today about the transmission cooling.

newdude....can you post the link for the above picture on the transmission lines & condenser?

1 - True on trucks that are late 2016 to 2018 when NHT was available.  2014-early 2016 trucks, those with or without NHT the transmission flows through both the radiator and the aux cooler.  The aux then became the only/primary cooler for late 2016-2019 trucks.

 

2 - All the K2 trucks have this.  They call it a "Combi Cooler".  Not the first time in the industry its been done before.  My mom's 2009 Mercury Mariner 4 cylinder has a condenser/AT combi cooler.

It's my understanding standing, that on my '17 Double Door LTZ with the max tow package, the oil cooler is built into the A/C condenser. Can't help you on the p/n

Transmission aux cooler is in the condenser on all 14-19 V8s, NHT or not.  Its the 2016.5-2019s where it only goes through there and not the radiator as well.  The trans cooler in the condenser is the only cooler for the transmission. 

 

14-16 trucks flow through the radiator then the condenser aux.

I hate to bring up an old topic but my 2015 5.3 has this same set up but KNP code. It has a 09/15 build date so they must have started in

What "same setup"?  The combi-cooler?  Or the way the lines are plumbed?
