Was driving my Silverado around (1500 Trail Boss) and the check engine light came on with Service ESC. Took it to the dealer and they mentioned that the CAM was shot and needed to be replaced. How common is this issue and im wondering if this issue can be considered a lemon. My truck is 2019 (84K miles) and I already had the transmission replaced.

Lifter failures that lead to camshaft damage are very common with the AFM engines. One of the main things that can go wrong with these engines, lots of people never have an issue but those that do can see these type of failures.

It's not a lemon law issue, just bad luck. Lemon law stuff is when it's the same problem over and over and over and they can never fix it. This is your first engine related failure like this.

I would want to see the codes thrown by the engine.  There should be significant drivability issues and misfires recorded if it's a failed lifter AND cam.  I would like to know what service they performed to know it was a bad cam, since the only way to tell is to pull the heads and look down the lifter bores, or pull the cam out entirely.

Mine ((2020) GMC ZRX)did something similar but all my lights and gages stopped working 3 times on my way home. The last time they came back on they stayed on and haven’t done it again. Also truck shifts weird sometimes and wayyyyy too early. Sometimes you gotta make it shift. Also the rpm’s fluctuate while driving and when I’m stopped. When I accelerate I can hear a tick coming from the motor like a misfire or something but it doesn’t do it all the time. Out of time on warranty and didn’t get an extended one.

    • New to this forum.  Also looking to tune a 6L80 and trying to work out all the issues in my transmission swap.  I have a 6.2 diesel (1983) and have removed the TH-400 and about to put in a 6L80 with a TCM-2600 interface and don't have a clue what I doing after that.  Did you (Leatherneck/RAV3) get your slip resolved? I too hate to spend that kind of money on a tuner that hopefully I will not need too many times although from what steelerdude15 added about the HP Tuner being great for diagnostics would be a plus.  I am also from WNC but below you in Columbus.  Any helo would be greatly appreciated.

    • Wouldn't swapping out the original AFM/DFM parts for a complete Delete Kit be the best route to go if one could afford to go that route?
    • It comes with directions but yes, generally, it's the same.  Also, get you the dipstick stuff to install dipstick so you have one.
