Purchased last month with 149,000 miles….driven about 2,000 miles some heavy towing but nothing out of the ordinary.  Truck all of sudden will not shift out of first gear.  No noise, no hard shifts prior to this.  Check Engine light on.   Visiting relatives and had to tow the truck to a dealer in a small town 3 hrs from home with very young technicians that do not have high ratings online.  They said it needed a new transmission and would cost $9600.00 to replace.  Is this common or should I tow to a reputable dealer near my home?

I say this all the time because this drives me NUTS! DO NOT GO TO THE DEALER!!! They are not paid to take the proper time for a proper diagnosis. Corporate screws the techs as badly as their customers. You only go to a dealer for warranty work - that's it! Especially not with a 2016.

 

That said, you should be going to a reputable TRANSMISSION shop. People that do nothing but transmission swaps day in and day out. It will cost you a TENTH of what you'll spend in the dealer, and it will be fixed RIGHT, unlike the dealer in most situations like this. Sometimes a failing sensor (like the MAF on gas trucks) can fail and take out a transmission. A dealer will take your $10k, throw a trans in it and never change the MAF. Then next year (or sooner!), you'll be doing the exact same thing right as the warranty runs out.

 

Take it to a trans shop. Even in the worst of cases, a rebuild won't cost HALF of what you were quoted.

Thanks so much!  Only option at the time where I broke down and I thought it would be something simple like a speed sensor …boy I was wrong!  Plus you are correct about diagnosing as the shop was only open half day today due to Christmas Eve and they diagnosed it in like 30 minutes.

What trouble codes came up on the diag report?

 

I hope they atleast gave you that.

They did not.  They said it could be throttle body and would cost $3000 to replace but might not fix the issue.

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
    • It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.
