Oil filter

I still have a PF59 filter left over from my old truck, however the new HD says I need the PF44. Do you guys see any problem with using the PF59, as I seem to be having a hard time finding the PF44's on the shelves and I hate to go to the stealership to buy one.

I called the dealership, and they told me that the number got switched to a PF46. So much for my manual being correct. Maybe I can find the filter on the shelf now that I have the correct part number.

I couldn't find the P44's anywhere either. Nobody stocked them. I had to go to a "real" auto parts store to get them. They are Hastings, made in the USA also. Anyway, a Hastings match for a PF44 is very small, much smaller than the filter for my '98 5.7L, which I THINK may have been a PF59. You better check to make sure it would physically fit. I think you can also get oil filters from NAPA to fit your truck. Good luck!!

My 2001 HD came with a PF59. So I would say it is totally safe to use it.

Just to let you guys know, I found the AC Delco PF46 filter in stock at Murray's at a $1.50 cheaper than the stealership.

I changed my oil for the first time this weekend and what a mess! The exhaust pipe crosses over directly in line with the drain plug, so when I pulled the plug the oil came out in a fast stream(engine was warm) and hit the exhaust pipe and splattered all over the place. Next time I'll rigged something up to deflect the oil down and away from the exhaust pipe.

I found a guy selling filters on Ebay. He has 50,000 PF59 filters!!!! $1 each. But he only wants to sell them in cases of 60. Anyone want to split a case with me? If 4 guys want to...it would be well worth it.

1Bad.....my 02 HD takes the 59 - not sure what wifes 04 Tahoe takes yet (havent changed the oil) - but if it takes the 59 - ill go in with you. - no problem. 20 would last me about 2 years for both trucks. Perfect.

The Tahoes manual calls for the the 44.......if I run the 59 - will the stealer ever give me a hard time ??? If anythin should ever happen ??

I have the same concern about doing the same thing. I would hate to have warranty work voided over an oil filter.

What a boneheaded design, huh? I had the same problem so I used to wrap the exhaust in aluminum foil and put a BIG piece of cardboard under the truck to catch the splatters. Now, I have a Fumoto valve and no more mess (of course, it drains so d@mn slow that it gets a bit frustrating, but at least I don't get oil everywhere).

I made a custom funnel out of a gallon windshield washer fluid jug. I carved it so the handle is still on it to hold, and it fits over the pipe perfectly. No mess, no splatters!

YEAH, WHY WOULD THEY GO TO A SMALLER FILTER? MAYBE BECAUSE MODERN ENGINES ARE LASTING SO MUCH LONGER AND THEY FIGURE THEY WILL SELL

MORE VEHICLES IF THE LONGEVITY ON OUR ENGINES IS REDUCED. I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY HARM IN GOING TO A DEEPER FILTER.

same here, I looked @ the filter and it is small. My 98 grand am has a bigger filter than that..

What's the biggest that can fit on there? Just the59?

The 59 is the biggest I've seen. I think there's a 58 that's physically the same size, but IIRC it doesn't have the anti-drainback valve. And since I have the CSK I'd never consider a filter without the valve.

The sales department gave me a couple of free services so I have had my dealer change the oil twice. The first time they used a PF44 and the second a PF59 so I guess that means that the choice of which filter to use is up to you. If there is any difference in the filters beside capacity I don't know what it is and so far I have yet to hear of anyone else mention any differences either. If you feel better using the PF59 for it's higher capacity then I think you should be safe. Check with your dealer if you have warranty concerns. My dealer also uses 10W30 oil even though the manual calls for 5W30. I guess he does not want to buy bulk oil in more than one grade for all the shop's applications. The little filter must have enough capacity to go the extended mileage intervals indicated by the GM Oil Life System now in use on our vehicles. Hopefully we will not all find out too late! I am going to use the PF59 if I don't decide to use the Amsoil filter. Depends on cost to some extent as the Amsoil filter is $10.45 but I will only need two per year.
