I recently bought the steel 8” drop 2.5” shaft Weigh Safe hitch like Pryme has except mine has the updated Ver 2 glycerin filled scale. The storage case now accommodates the 2” and 2.5” shaft size steel hitches. I got that also. The steel hitch is wicked beefy and heavy.

i haven’t towed anything yet with the Weigh Safe as my utility trailer and boat/trailer are tucked away for the winter. I plan on getting an N&N dump trailer next Spring if they are readily available.

I wonder if my call to them got them rolling on getting that case compatible with the steel one. Because I talked to them awhile about it. Glad they made it compatible.

Maybe. Thanks if they did. Weigh Safe had a 15% off sale and everything on the website showed the reduced price except for the hitch I wanted. I had to do a phone order.

I notice that there are accessories for the aluminum hitch, like the rubber piece to keep the multi gate from hitting the hitch. Not available for the steel hitch. I email them frequently and suggested to make accessories compatible for both aluminum and steel hitches or at least have the same available for both types.

Pic of the 8" steel drop hitch in the storage case. The case came with some spacers but they don't fit with the steel hitch due to offset at the top of hitch. They are made to stabilize the aluminum hitch in the case.

Another thing I noticed is that the slider has a WS rubber plug that is the same as the pintle hitch slider. The rear of the pintle hitch goes in the hole when the rubber plug is removed.

What lock set up did you get?  And what is the 2” ball rated for?

I got the keyed alike hitch locking pin. Came with 2 sets of keys, one set for the hitch locking pin and a set for the hitch slider lock. All keys have the same number on them. If you need more locks from WS, can get the same key number.

The 2" ball is rated for 10k lbs. The 2 5/16 ball says to see the hitch rating which is V-5 rated, 2200 lbs max tongue weight, 22,000 lbs gross trailer weight.

This hitch is rated way more than my truck, 1600 lbs tongue weight and 16k lbs max tow rating for conventional towing.

Ha! I’m sure it’s just like mine! I see a lot of stuff engineered in the USA and sourced globally. I doubt I’ll ever wear out the hitch in my lifetime at 65 years old. I’m lucky I can pick up the case!

Do you know if the tow rating is the same on the steel version vs the aluminum version ?. I assume the info is on their website, I haven't looked at it closely enough. That would surely be the advantage of the aluminum unit, the weight issue but imagine not as robust though.

It’s on the website. 18,500 lbs for GTW on the 2.5” shank aluminum. 2200 lbs tongue weight. Still rated more than my truck. Pretty certain I would have never worn out the aluminum hitch. I like the black steel better for looks.

My brother in law tows with the aluminum one, mostly an enclosed car hauler for drag racing and an open car hauler. He never mentioned any issues.

Ok so they do derate it somewhat but like you say its still within what the trucks rated capacity is anyway. The dollar factor is one of the main issues typically with the aluminum units, plus that shiny aluminum probably attracts thieves although if its locked onto the truck then that's not a concern. My brother has some brand of an aluminum unit that is a number of years old but has not been used all that much, its a 2" unit and I like its weight factor for sure for ease of handling it but it would not begin to have the rating of these 2 1/2" units. The concept is sure nice though as per setting the height on units like this for a variety of truck and trailer combinations vs a typical solid non adjustable unit.

The problem with aluminum ones is over time they can bore the holes in oblong shapes and make a lot more sound. I’ve seen it happen but not on a weigh safe specifically.

the steel one is an absolute unit. But like rjgvt alludes to, the case is very heavy. Not a big deal if you’re a strong guy but for a smaller person or someone injured it could be a problem.

I just tossed mine on a scale and it’s 40lbs. Compare that to your avg power tool drill driver combo kit which is probably 3-4lbs in the same size case and it’s a beast.

Your right, aluminum can not take the punishment that steel can although some aluminum alloys would be tougher than regular aluminum and certain surface treatments can help some so they claim as well. I suspect hitches are made out of some form of aluminum alloy to have the ratings they do.

If someone on here had the matching aluminum unit and weighed that, would be interesting to know how much less it weighs. A solid piece of steel like you two have, that is going to weigh up and weighs almost as much as carrying around a Honda 2200 generator. Just think if one owned one of those top trim Ram half ton pickups, a weigh safe hitch and a Honda generator with a spare two gallon jerry can of gas and just the driver would be half the carrying capacity right there 🤣

Weighed my Weigh Safe case, 40.1 lbs.

I weighed the Northern Tool 6" drop forged 17k pound rated hitch with 1700 pound tongue weight and a Curt 2" 10k ball at 19.1 lbs. I used this hitch for my boat. 2" shank. I bought this hitch because it clears the MultiPro tailgate. I disabled the inner gate when ever I put a ball mount in.

Had a 2" drop 6000 pound rated hitch with a 2 5/16" ball also rated for 6000 pounds. I used this hitch several years ago to move a couple of campers with a 2002 Chevy 1500HD I had. I had in my current truck for just in case. Weighed 9.4 pounds. 2" shank.

Also had an 8" drop hitch rated at 5000 pounds with a 2" ball on it that I got from my cousin in PA when I was there but gave it back to him recently because I got the Weigh Safe. My guess is that it weighed around 10 pounds considering it was bigger than the 2" drop hitch and used it for my utility trailer. 2" shank.

I removed 19.1 lbs + 9.4 lbs of hitches today + the hitch I gave back to my cousin ~10 lbs = ~38.5 lbs

Replaced ~38.5 pounds of hitches with a 40 pound Weigh Safe hitch in a case that will do it all and will not need the 2" to 2.5" adapter.

I don't have the Weigh Safe in the truck yet but will when I need to tow.

That's a good point about carrying multiple hitches when they are non adjustable and need more than one drop height as well as both 2 and 2 5/16 ball for various trailer setups. The only issue with a 2 1/2 sized receiver and hitch inserts ( or a kit like you have ) is that they don't fit into a 2" receiver if one has multiple vehicles and the others have a 2" receiver. But to get the strength/capacity in both the hitch on a heavy duty truck and the insert, there's a reason why 2 1/2" and 3" receivers are made.

Earlier this year when I got my truck and was looking for some spare hitch pins that are long enough as a standard pin for a 2" receiver just isn't long enough. I saw they had some Curt standard style inserts for 2 1/2" and they were heavy duty models of solid cast steel and as you well know they are a chunk of iron compared to a typical 2" size with 1/4 wall tube with welded on ball mount.

With the exception of the 8" drop hitch that I don't have anymore, I have the other 2" shank hitches in the garage including a 1 7/8 ball mount I found stashed in the garage a while back. I'll most likely never use it as they're used on the smallest trailers.

I sent Weigh Safe a message today to find out if the glycerin filled scale will freeze if I keep it in the back of my truck during Vermont winters. I'll post when they reply.
