2006 Silverado LT 4WD Automatic Z71.  My truck had a decent set of General Grabber APT tires When I bought it.They've gone for 50,000 miles which isn't terrible, but I plan to look around at some other options.

 

This is my first truck. My usage is mostly in town and highway driving, but I do drive on gravel back roads a few times every month to camp and float rivers, as well as visiting friends in the country. No real off-roading except for driving around pastures on a friend's farm occasionally. Not much towing, and any I do would be fairly light. My annual mileage isn't high, about 15,000 miles/yr. I do plan to keep this truck for several years, perhaps 5-10 years.

 

So I'm contemplating sticking with an all terrain tire vs switching to an all weather highway tire such as the Michelin Defender LTX or similar. The $289 price including installation at Sam's Club is a little more than I wanted to pay. I'd prefer something closer to $200 or so, but I can live with the higher price if the value is there.

 

Reasons for a possible switch: smoother ride on paved roads, better gas mileage, quieter (maybe), better wear.

 

Cons: I'm mainly concerned about being tough enough for the portion of driving I do on gravel and rougher roads. I don't want a nice set of highway tires to get ripped up on a gravel road

 

Any recommendations on best options in these two categories? I'm looking at Michelin, Falken, General, Continental, BF Goodrich, Nitto, etc, but pretty open minded as long as it's not Chinese crap.

 

PS: I'll leave this up for additional discussion if anyone is interested. Tires are usually an active lively topic. I ordered the Toyo Toyo Open Country A/T III - 265/70R17 115T  from Sam's an made an appointment for installation in a few days. I'll post a review after I've put some miles on them.

I currently have Continentals on my GMC 4x4.  Like you, 99% of my driving is on the road.  I've only engaged 4WD once in 6 years and the tires did fine.  But I'm not a mud-hogger and it sounds like you aren't either.  For me, buying an all terrain tire and listening to the humming isnt desirable "just because I have a 4x4".  I recommend a highway tire.

 

I just put Toyo tires on my Honda car.  I was a bit cautious knowing nothing about them but my dealer I've dealt with for 25 years recommended them.  Its my first departure from the Continental, General and other "known" names.  They are a Japanese company so that alone gave me confidence to try them, made in Georgia USA.   I've been well satisfied too. And, the price was very reasonable.  I'll probably put them on my truck next time.

Thank you, Jworks! I'm looking pretty hard at both the Toyos and the Continental. And I'm leaning more towards a good solid highway tire.

 

Though I am concerned how my driving on gravel roads a few times a month will affect them. I haven't been able to determine that yet.

 

Is it the Continental Terrain Contact H/T on your GMC and the Toyo Open Country H/T on your Honda?

I work in the tire business, here is my suggestions.

 

Nitto Terra Grappler G3's

Toyo Open Country AT3's

Hankook Dynapro AT's

 

Also just a fun fact, Discount tire sells that same exact Hankook tire under the name Pathfinder AT I believe as their house brand. It will save you some money and it's the same tire made by Hankook for discount. Google the pictures if you want to see it.

There are plenty of other tires out there too, the BFG's and Michelins will cost more and do exactly what you need them to do as well. And don't disregard many of the offbrand tires that may have weird names. Tons of them are made by the largest tire companies in the world.

 

Like for example. Sumitomo owns Falken tire but you don't hear many people talk about Sumitomo. Then there is a Tire brand called National Tires, many of those are made by Sumitomo but are a way cheaper option for tires. Sure they may not last 60,000 miles on some vehicles but when they cost half the price and still go 45-50k miles, the price can really be worth it.

The only "brand" tire I've had consistent, reliable, long life, good tread wear, good balancing, no punctures, no blow-outs, no road hazards, good traction - have all been BFGoodrich.

 

All Terrain TA KO (2 sets)

All Terrain TA KO2 (2 sets)

Advantage TA (4 sets)

Long Trail TA (3 sets)

Trail Terrain TA (1 set)

 

Every other brand has had one issue or another.

 

Michelin - wouldn't stand behind warranty (3 sets)

Pirelli - couldn't survive my gravel driveway (1 set)

General - couldn't keep air in them for all the punctures and poor tread wear (1 set)

Goodyear - mediocre performance by every metric (2 sets)

Continental - mediocre performance (1 set)

Bridgestone - mediocre performance, the only other brand I've had that I would re-consider (1 set)

 

Observations

All the Nitto tires I see have weird tread wear on them

 

As already noted, no telling who owns what anymore, or if it even matters. Who did the R&D, who specified the compounds, who manufactured it, what warranty does it come with, what price point, dealer, and the list goes on... All to get to my point, which is, internet recommendations I think are pretty worthless. 

 

I am going to buy what I've had good success with and will have to have a very compelling reason to switch.

 

For example, on our Yukon Denali, we had to make some rush decisions on tires due to some other circumstances that included a wheel size change. The tires I WANTED were no longer in production (KO2) and the KO3 was REALLY expensive with a long lead time. Ended up with a set of Ironman something or others - supposedly made by Cooper. They were a fraction of the cost, and I haven't had any major complaints given they were $700.00 for all four. (They have a slight vibration at high speeds 85+)

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
