My '21 Denali needs brakes.  It's at the dealer because I thought the brake indicator sensor was bad and it's under warranty.  I'll go look in the morning, but they said it's just the brakes and quoted $926 for the front and $786 for the rear (rotors and pads).  For a total of $1700.  With a discount from Costco I'll get that closer to $1450.  I'm sure that's expensive but of course, nothing is cheap and there's no way I'm doing it myself.  So I'm asking how outrageous that price is?  I'm not going to bother going and getting the truck and finding a good mechanic (I don't currently have one because I've been driving new so long) for a couple hundred but much more than that and I'll have to consider it.  What's a good price for a complete brake job?  Also, they quoted $210 for a brake system flush, which according to the manual (severe service) should be done every 5 years.  So, I guess that should be done too.  Looking for some advice.  TIA

Seems a bit high for dealer rate but every dealer has different labor rates. My local dealer uses a lower hourly rate for service work like brake jobs, some suspension and other odds and ends. It's like $50 less per hour compared to the regular shop rate which is over $200 now.

 

Smaller independent and chain stores around me are less per hour labor rates. Ranging from around 150-190 a hour. So they will always be cheaper than a dealer. From what I see and being in the parts business I hear brake jobs are ranging from $500-700 for trucks now. For a rough example, a local shop is buying the higher end rotors and pads for about $150-200 total, then you double it for re-sale, plus the labor. This is non-dealer parts I'm talking about.

Thanks for the input with actual numbers.  I didn't do too bad because I had the Costco discount of 15% so it ended up costing me closer to $1,400.  I also talked him down just a little so ended up spending $2,100 (including taxes) for the brakes, brake fluid change, fluid change for the transaxle and the front differential.  I already had the transmission done so I'm up to date on my 45K miles / 5 year services using the severe schedule in the owners manual.

Wait! So you had $2100 worth of brake work and a fluid swap done at 45K? I'm at 192K and on the OEM brakes with more than half left! :wtf:

 

Look, I just had a water heater replaced that cost me over $2K and I felt a fool. As it turns out, I was. I feel your pain. 

 

The plumber that did the actual install under contract from the supplier said had I called him direct I would have paid a thousand less. Live an learn.....learn two things. 

 

Liars and cheats lie and cheat. Do what you've always done and you get what you've always got. Understand? Learn to drive it like it hasn't any brakes and skip about five $2K brake jobs. Or ignore it all and take the beatings you've always taken.

 

Back to the plumber. COVID interrupted supply chains and cost when skyward. Supply chains recovered but the greedy hoped you didn't notice the 30% reduction in your buying power. The honest did. Find the honest ones.

unfortunately Grumpy the 2019 and newer are not like your 2105 or my 2014 which i went 160k before it needed brakes. my 2020 was at the dealership when i was at 58k for warranty work and they said i needed rear brakes and i thought no way. i pulled my wheels and they were right, rear inner pads were worn down to nothing and the outer pad was at 50 %. the fronts were fine. for some reason the 2019 and newer like to eat rear brakes. i replaced the rear rotors and pads with aftermarket parts and 30k later i had to do the rear rotors again at 90k. so i bit the bullet and went oem and replaced everything front and rear. i am now at 135k and the brakes are wearing the way i expected from the start. 45k and the brakes are still at 80 percent all around, don't know why they are wearing good now

Quick question: do you need a special tool or scanner to replace the front or rear pad, since the 2025 model has some kind of wear detector? Obviously Its not that I need to do the job now but Im curious to know

1500s you do.  You have to retract the parking brake which can be done with a scan tool, or via a procedure with the parking brake button/switch on the dash.  

 

Also.  Disconnecting the negative battery cable is a MUST on the 1500s as if you don't, all sorts of errors and warnings will trigger.

 

HDs do not need any sort of procedure as the parking brake is separate from the caliper.  So only servicing the parking brake would require a special procedure.

I've owned my truck for Just over five years.  I put new tires on it (earlier than needed), I've changed the oil and filters ahead of schedule and now I just completed the fluid changes recommended using the severe maintenance schedule in the manual.  It always hurts to spend $2,100 but I'm doing everything I can to keep this truck in good repair.  For one, that's just my nature.  Second, is that I loan it to my daughter to pull a small camper when her family (grandkids) go camping.  Given the cost of a new truck, or any vehicle for that matter, $2,100 is a small price to pay for reliable transportation that also provides good utility from time to time.  All tolled, I've spent $4,500 on maintenance - so less than a $100 per month and less than 10 cents per mile.  That seems reasonable.  I wish I had the tools and ability to do things like the brakes, but those days are gone.  I did all the work on my cars in my teens through my 30's.  Then I got a job with a car stipend, leased cars, and never had to even think about repairs.  However, in retirement (8 years), I now own my vehicles and I'll have to pay to get things done.  I think the best thing I could do now is find a good independent mechanic so I don't have to rely on the dealer.

Its the OEM dealer, what do you expect? Discount Prices?   That's almost exactly what I paid on my 2021 Sierra Denali.  Other shops were somewhat cheaper, those that would put estimate in writing.  But they did not leave a sense of competence in my view and did not use GM parts, whatever was locally available at parts store.  Did not like that feeling so I paid the GM price, which included a loaner for the day that other shops would not.  

 

btw - Mine rotors were all corroded from road salt and I was 3 months past the bumper-bumper warranty so they could not get it covered by  warranty.

    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔           
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you  
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package.
