Shifting T/C in Cold Weather

Recommended Posts

Has anyone experienced difficulty manually shifting their T/C when the weather is below freezing? I've never had problem w/ previous trucks, but w/ my '04, I have to stop the truck & grab the shifter handle w/ both hands to shift it into 4HI.

Does the linkage need adjustment or are the tolerances so tight that the cold tightens the parts up so much to make shifting difficult?

Things contract when cold, so I would lean more towards the grease thickening up being the culprit, rather than tight tolerances.

I had a manny tranny that I couldn't shift to save my life if the temp dropped below about 10 degrees...I changed to a lighter weight gear oil during the winter, and that helped a TON.

But if the clearances are tight to start w/, any contraction will cause binding in the linkage. It just seems strange that my previous truck a 2000 K2500 w/ same drivetrain shifted fine in cold weather.
