My brake pedal is loose

Kind of odd.

But my brake pedal seems to have a lot of play in it, and not play in the travel in the direction of pushing on it but rather if you were to grab the pedal and move it left to right there seems to be excessive play.

 

Enough play that when I go over rough bumps I can hear / feel the pedal wobble around. If I "hold" it with my foot as I go over a bump I dont hear/feel the rattle.

 

Any ideas?

There may be a set of bushings at the pivot point of the pedal that are worn or even broke,sometimes they are made of nylon...

It may have a ltlle play (left & right)no more than 1/8" total(1/16" from center)..only an opinion.....But it shouldnt be excessive..too much side to side play may affect the power booster push rod.

 

Only way to know 4 sure,would be to stick your head up under the dash and take a look-see for anything that doesnt look right

ex..cracked bushing,loose pedal mounting bolts or pivot..these are just guess'

What the heck, am I the only one w/ this issue? I now have a 2003 tahoe with the same problem! Have to replace the nylon bushing.. Thing rattles around over bumps and stuff. drives me crazy..

I really can't help you much with your problem...My '89 truck did that, not quite as bad as you're describing, but it did it.

 

That little trick you do where you hold it from rattling with your foot? Yeah....If you sold your truck today, you'll keep doing that in your next truck for at least a year, even though the pedal doesn't have that play.

I've got a similar problem problem with my 02 sierra. I will get a popping noise / sensation through the pedal from time to time. Like the rod does not quite line up properly with pedal lever? I have not dug into it yet to figure out whats up. Drives you crazy though.

There is a long plastic bushing that needs replacing. I've had this done on 05 z71 already. My 01 sierra had 3 of them. Yes, it does drive me nuts over bumps also. So no, you arent the only one with the problem. Take it to the dealer and have them replace the bushing. It doesnt take too long.

Yeah I did it myself on my last hoe' its easy just drives me crazy.. how does this thing break...

Where is this bushing? On the pedal mount ? I've had mine at the dealership and as usual they did not hear any noise.

from what I remember, its basically in with the large bolt that holds the break pedal on. Tak off the large nut / bolt, pull the pin from the fire wall and the break coes off. there should be a nylon bushing about og 5 inches long that makes a 'sleeve' for the bolt to slide through...
