I called the local transmission shop about installing a shift kit. The price I suppose was't bad, but he could not guarantee the transmission (4l60e) because of the sun shell. Is this a common weak point and how weak? Is there any other areas of concern?

Planetaries and input/output shafts are pretty weak too. 3-4 clutch pack tends to burn up. Some believe it is due to torque management dropping line pressure which cuts delivery to the 3-4 pack. The TransGo shift kit is an awesome setup. Cures alot of inherent problems with the 4L60 aside from weak internals. Im hoping to throw in a TransGo, HD spacer plate, metal accumulator piston and Vette Intermediate servo. Thats another thing. If you do a shift kit, make sure they replace the stock plastic crap accumulator.

Thanks for the insight and link. I was also looking at the Transgo shift kit and that is what led me to call the trans shop. I wonder if this failure is more common in trucks/vans than other gm vehicles.

Yeah but these "kits" add more strain to internal sprag clutches and such that is why they will not warrant it. Personally I would never install one without a complete tear down and internal beef up. You are playing with fire here.
