2000 Jimmy SLE 4wd Service 4WD light

So, I just bought this Jimmy used with 61K miles for a decent price. I love the truck all and all. The truck was out of alignment and told them to align it up and I would by it, so they did. However, right as I was driving off the lot, the Service 4WD light started flashing on and off every so often. I stopped and grabbed the sales manager and showed him. He drove it off to the shop and then returned saying that when they were cleaning the dash, the buttons must have been stuck down or something to that effect. Seemed reasonable so I got in and drove home no problem. Got in later that night and the light came on again as well as all 3 lights on the dash relating to the 4WD and the AUTO 4WD light as well. The truck also seemed as though it kept switching back and forth from 2WD to 4WD. Not good. I have read on this forum that there are common problems with a switch for the 4wd. Do you think that is what is happening here? If so, should I bother taking it back to where I bought it to get them to fix or just buy the part and install it myself? The dealer I bought from is not a GM dealer so I don't know if they would know how to properly fix this problem.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Did you buy this with any kind of warranty?

If so, I'd let them fix it.

If not then I'd try the switch replacement, it is relatively cheap and easy to do.

Hope this helps.

It comes with a 30 day 1000 mile warranty plus I bought an extended warranty online. However, I don't know if the extended warranty would cover the problem or not. I will be taking it back to the dealer today to see what they have to say. I did call a Chevy service department and they said it was either a switch or an acuator (sp?). I am really hoping that the dealer will do the right thing and just fix this.

It is a software issue

Get the TSB from www.alldata.com

Is this the one you are talking about?

I don't see anything else related in the listings.

Try shifting from 2wd to awd then back to 2wd then to neutral then back to 2wd then to 4wd and watch the lights to see if they change accordingly. Also note if the unit is engaging into the different modes. If not then the switch is probably bad. If you have a warranty I'd use it. The extended warranty usually covers drivetrain and related parts, but you need to read the fine print to see. If not It's not a biggie as it doesn't cost much for the switch.

I did all that and the lights appeared to be okay (although the service 4wd light came on again at one point). I did feel the 4wd engage when I put it in 4 LO.

I will be taking it back to the dealer tomorrow and see what they say based on what I know. As far as I am concerned, they can keep it until they fix it.

So I did the steps that Apache Serria told me and ever since then I have not had any problems. Was that supposed to reset something? Do I still need to get this looked at?

Thanks,
