Fluid change

I am going to be changing my fluids in my 2002 2500HD. I want to change the transmation fluid out to synthetic. I was told to just dump the pan and fill backup with synthetic. This would get rid of a good amount of the non-synthetic but not all and just do that the next few times and I would be a full synthetic about the third time. Good idea?? Is there an easy way to do it all at once?

 

 

Also this is a 4x4 and was wondering for the transfer case. It says to use Autotrack II fuild in the owner manual. Where the heck can I get this? Or is it like ATF fuild like my S10 did?

 

Anyone know where to mobil 1? I am looking for 80w-95 for the front axle and can not seem to find it around here. I figuring ordering it online is my only hope.

The only way to swap all all the tranny fluid at once is a flush. As far as the transfer case, I didn't think the 2500HD's had AutoTrak, I know mine does not. If you can't find 80W90 Mobil you can use the 75W-90 as that is close enough. The "problems" happen when you use the 140W stuff especially in cold weather.

The Auto Zone here carries the Mobil 1 80-95 oil.

 

I didn't think the 2500HD's had the Auto Trak II either. Well live and learn. If so they you need to use that fluid and only that stuff, Only place to get it is the dealer. As far as I know no other manufacture makes a replacement for the Auto Trak II.

 

It might be a pain in the butt, but to drop your pan and change the filter then fill up with synthetic is an easy way to start the process. Then on your next oil change just drain the transmission pan at the same time as you change your oil and filter. Do this at every engine oil change for at least 3 and you will have changed out 99% of the fluid. This is a lot cheaper than doing it all up front at one time with a flush. Don't get me wrong there isn't anything wrong with flushing it, just that this method is eaiser on the wallet.

I have push button 4x4 but for some reason in the book it says that autotrak II stuff which to me is weird.

 

 

 

Just looked on Mobil1's website and they dont' even make a 80w90 so I will just go with the 75w90. There is no way to tell the difference is there if something should go wrong with the front diff?

You will be just fine with the 75w-90. There are several of us that are using that and no problems at all.

 

I remember reading in here that if your transfer case used regular ATF that you could put the AutotrakII in it but if you had the AutotrakII you can't put regular ATF in it. The internal design of the Autotrak transfer case requires the AutotrakII fluid. Do a search on here and you will come up with all kinds of good info.

Lets clear this up

 

If you have the BLUE fluid in your transfer case, you need to go to the dealer and get the autotrak transfer case fluid. REGUARDLESS IF YOU HAVE AUTOTRAK OR NOT! My 00 S-10 ZR2 had the blue stuff.

 

If you have RED fluid, you CAN use ATF but there is a tsb on GMSI that states to use the new autotrak fluid.

I did my Transcase a few weeks ago - it was red - but I put in the Blue stuff. Not to highjack thread - but at what milage are you guys dopping the pan of your Trannys and doing the filter. My HD has 28k on it and was thinking it is getting close to time. I think I would drop the pan and filter and refill with Mobil 1 synthetic ?? Thoughts.

Do you happen to know the number of that TSB? I'm curious as to why GM would now recommend using the AutoTrak in not AutoTrak transfer cases. IOW what does it fix or improve on over ATF? I don't think it is pure synthetic is it?

I changed my external filter at 5K miles. I'm not sure what the next interval for that one is, 25-30K I'm guessing but will have to look. I think the internal one does not get changed until 50K

Thats what I figured for the Allison....but I should have mentioned that I have 4l80e as I have the 6.0L. I know still a HD - but not as HD as the DM or 8.1's ?!?! :devil:

the push button 4wd still uses atf in the t-case unless the switch has the auto 4wd button then it needs autotrak fluid

also any vehicle with all wheel drive ie safari or any suv's also take autotrak fluid

    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.
    • So after reading the reveal from Chevrolet, I kept asking myself...why did the trim levels change?   Here are the official ones:   Work Truck (WT): The quintessential fleet truck, built with durable, easy-to-clean interiors for commercial or utilitarian use. Carplay is also something that cannot be removed.  Hopefully it will remain.     I am excited about the 5.7L V8 (350 C.I.D.)  Old school Chevy power.  My only concern is whatever version of AFM/DFM cylinder deactivation.  Too bad that isn't an option a buyer can choose to have or not.   I will definitely be stopping by my local dealership when these trucks start showing up.

    • The not as clean as one would assume theme with the new engine oil, that reminds me of comments over the years with mechanics not always being so on board with filling an oil filter, not from the center anyway due to that typically being the clean side of the filter, danger of some contaminant falling into the filter if not careful but the realization now that the oil may not be as pure as one had assumed it would surely be. Yes it would be possible to fill from the small holes but that means messing with something to prop open the anti drain back valve if the filter is so equipped and not damage that valve in the process. Me, I have hardly ever prefilled an engine oil filter however I have prefilled diesel fuel filters with a filter on a fuel bulk tank and for anyone that has messed with diesel engines with filters and units that have a limited or no way of priming them, putting on a dry filter is a bad day to say the least with those crappy systems. But anyway back to not so clean engine oil, indeed perhaps its not so bad after all that I have not made a practice of prefilling oil filters.    As Grumpy Bear commented on keeping things clean, that I really have to wonder what the typical practice is at a dealer or any other shop that changes engine oil, do they make sure to wipe or wash off the oil plug and certainly if it fell into some gunk or onto a dirty floor, or that they wiped the filter mounting flange and didn't go and use some dirty rag and end up adding dirt to the inside of the head of the filter mount. Or be careless in how they stored or handled the new filter and if they were bumping into items under the vehicle with the filter opening facing up and having dirt drop right into the filter and if so right into the threaded center that is on the clean side. The top side, did they clean away the built up gunk that may be around the filler before removing the cap or to be really careful at that point that something right close to the filler hole that was hidden under the caps flange won't fall into the engine. Or did they clean the funnel or was that just laying there covered in oil from the oil change before and dust kicked up from sweeping the floor stuck to the oil and now that will go running into the next persons engine due to just not cleaning the funnel as "they won't know anyway" attitude as that young guy is more worried about taking a break so he can go outside and smoke a joint. Just random points that came to mind when I think about what some hired personnel may do that the shop foreman has no idea of or perhaps the whole attitude of some shops may be "eh ... who cares, they will never know the difference anyway".
