Bow Tie on the Avalanche

Recommended Posts

I am considering in the not so distant future, removing my gold av bow tie and replacing it with a chrome bow tie. Does it take special tools or much work to do this myself?

It should pop right off.  There's a tab on each side of it.  You can see my sight for some instructions on removing the bowtie off a silverado and the AVY is almost identical, just a slightly different shape.  Really simple, no special tools required.

What about removing the entire grill on the AV? Anyone done this yet?

Got my Billet coming in this week! :)

Heres what the back of a silverado bowtie looks like.  The avy is nearly identical.  This should help you out a bit.

As for removing the grille.  Look at the top center.  Is there a 9 or 11mm bolt?  If it's like the silverado's there is a bolt in the middle and 4 twist lock screws holding the grille on, very easy to remove.

I saw the aftermarket chrome bow tie for just under 40 bucks for the Avalanche, it appeared to have had screws and maybe nuts and washers or something in the package. Not quite sure but I know there was hardware. The current bow tie looks as if it doesnt have the same set up. Has anyone changed there's on the Avalanche?

bshef,

Its very easy to take the front grille shell off. Just a few plastic pop-tabs you wont have any problem. Did you order the TRENZ? It comes with rivets and though I have a rivet gun I used screws instead for ease. It will look great. What color is your Avalanche?

The Avalanche bowtie has the same clips on the back as the picture.  I was able to pop mine off by reaching under it and feeling for the tabs.  If your light is good, you can see them through a hole in the fan shroud by the latch on top.  I just covered mine in black vinyl from a sign shop for $5.  It's a little puckered around the outside corners, but looks fine from 5 feet away.  I'll probably try re-doing it since I have enough vinyl to cover it 2 more times.

Hey Matt,

Chevy didn't offer the dark Gray so I bought a Pewter AV.

Yep! Had a buddy of mine with a shop here in HB, order my grill from Trenz. Should be in this week.

Seeing more and more AV's on the road lately!!

I'm sorry, but I don't know what kind of vinyl this is and why it is found at sign shops.  Would a guy just go to any sign shop that does vehicle graphics and ask for some vinyl stock?

I would suggest using paint, you can achieve a much cleaner look w/ it.

True, paint would probably look better.

The vinyl is the stuff that they use for lettering on cars and boats.  It's pretty thin, cuts with a razor blade or exacto knife, and can be removed by peeling it off (a little heat helps too).  I just went in and asked if I could buy a piece of it.  I told them what I was going to do, and they cut a smaller piece and stuck it on to see how it would look.  The next time I might just trim it around the edge rather than wrapping it around.

Man, chev4x4--you're just a bowtie junkie, now aren't you? :)

why yes, yes I am.  I've got to have a few to change them around.  I'd like to have my own collection of different bowties, but people keep buying them and they're gone like that.

Right now I've got a flag, the stripes, and a red one.  I may make a black one also, and a few other designs, who knows.  It's a subtle way to change the appearance of your truck.

Nice color scheme, but it's the flag of The Netherlands (or Yugoslavia upside down.)  I like the stars-n-stripes bowtie much better.  Maybe there's some interest from our southern members in a stars-n-bars version?
