Hey All, my wife is looking for a new car and i think i got her to swing towards SUV or Truck. but what will really finish the deal is if she can tow the horse trailer...

Does anyone know a safe max weight for towing with a 1500 Tahoo? we're looking at a 2000 right now. she only has one horse, but we do have a 2 horse trailer so theres always the possiblity. plus i could use the trailer for hauling hay if this rig can carry enough...

thanks for thoughts and comments...

It depends on the axle ratio and engine. Is the Tahoe a 4x4 or 2x4? Also I would make sure that before I towed I would have a stout Class-V hitch and a top notch transmission cooler. As well as flush and fill the transmission with synthetic fluid, as well as the rear diff and engine.

BTW, I don't recommend the factory tow package, as the transmission cooler is a bit small and the factory hitch is an accident just waiting to happen.

Other than that, have you looked at a diesel Excursion?

If you have a horse, you will probably at some point want to tow a trailer with hay on it.

I think that the factory limits on the Tahoe are just over 7000 lbs with a 3:72 rear and a 5.3L. But don't hold me to that.

hahahah, you mean the FORD, right?

that should be plenty then. i can't see the horse (12-1400lbs) and the trailer (approx 1500-2500lbs) causing problems then, at a total of no more than 4000lbs leaves room for another horse or camping gear/hay...etc.

I'm looking at both 4x4 and 2x4. Thanks for the tip on the tranny cooler. i was considering one for my work truck since i haul a lot of product for customers and for some reason didn't even think about it for the horse hauler.... doh!

I always thought horse trailers were much heavier than that, and the horses! I know my 2002 Tahoe with 3.73 gears, 4x4, tow package, and the 5.3L engine is rated to tow 7300 pounds. My guess is that a 2000 is closer to 6500, as it tends to go up a bit with body style changes, etc. Also don't just consider the dead pull weight, but the tongue weight. Horse trailers have short tongues, and could put too much load on the rear axle.

ours is better equipped and lighter than most, and it's only a 2 horse, which is considerably lighter than say a 4 horse or even a stock trailer. Good points though.
