Hauling Shingles

We cannot find a clear answer to the amount of weight our GMC Sierra can haul in the rear bed. We need to haul shingle bundles that are about 80 lbs each. The owners manual does not list a definitive weight limit.

How many bundles? I would not go over 20. for a short time only, you might be better off to rent a trailer to be safe. IMO if you do spred the weight out over the bed,

 

But I have seen roofers trucks on the road loaded down so much that the rear bumper is about 4" off the ground, and when they hit a bump you can here the tires scraping the fenders.

There will be two Sierra's hauling 60 bundles (20 squares). Both of us have trailers as well. I am trying to determine how many bundles I can safely haul both in my truck and on a trailer. The manual just didn't seem clear to me. My truck is a 99 std cab, reg bed. The other truck is a 00 ext cab, reg bed.

The most shingles I have had in the back of my truck was 25.

 

I used to work in a lumber yard and load shingles a few yrs back. We used to load pallets onto pickups. (I believe they were 60-80lbs a piece). I wanna say the pallets held 24-48 bundles. Some manufacturers were different

ON my Hd I towed 2 pallets of miami dade shingles --the pallets were about waist high and I'm 5'9. So about 3ft high each pallet was.

 

Dont know how much that is or how this will help..

look in the door at the GVWR and then subtract the weight of the truck. 4500- 5000 lbs

I just hauled a pallet of laminate flooring (48 cartons) from Phoenix to my brother's house in Mesa (20 miles) with no problems. It was about 1500 pounds plus me, my dad and my brother. The forklift guy at Lumber Liquidators put the pallet in with the forklift with no problems. The backend sunk a little but not too much. Handled very well and I used 'tow-haul' mode with no problems. Drove the freeway the whole way.

I wouldn't go very much over 15-18 bundles in the back of the truck. As long as you stay within the load rating of the trailer, you may be able to carry most of it in the trailer.

that truck should handle at least 2000 lbs.

I put 1500 lbs INSIDE my astro van. !!!!

About 7 square (21 bundles) is pretty close to max on a 1500. Sure you could haul more, but why break something. A pallet is somewhere between 12 and 16 square depending on brand. We get all our shingles delivered free. Why not have them delivered. Then you don't have to carry all of them up the ladder. Have them brought to the house on a boom truck and put them on the roof. Your roofer will thank you.

Just a little devils advocate here, ut itns a 1500 called a half ton because that is the hauling capicity in the bed? Or has that changed in recent years?

I had a 74 3/4 ton 2wd that I abused. 2 things stick in my head, 1st we though a tarp in the back and went to get a 1/2 yard of concrete to finish my side walk......no problem but you have to watch the corners...talk about load shift.LOL

 

2nd I had a bunk(25) of 7"x9"X8' railroad ties that I hauled maybe 4 miles. I don't recommend that, about a month later the rt rr wheel bearing froze up at 60 mph on the highway. No problem pull off to the side backed up and it unlocked then I nursed it 1/2 mile home. One of the best workhorses I ever had.

Ive got a 2500, but ive seen my dad put a whole pallet, i dont know how much weight that is, but he did, then he put 4 pallets on a tralier, a pulled it with his 1500Z71

1000 pounds if everything is good. Tires, springs, brakes. I saw a guy getting a load of top soil, 1 yard and the rear tires blew out. A yard of top soil weighs about 1000 pounds.
