Tow Ratings?

I bet everybody has seen the latest Ford and GMC commercials. The GMC commercial says that the 3500 can tow 16,700 lbs while the Ford one rates the F-350 at 19,200 lbs. What the hell? They should be closer than that. Why doesn't GM up the anti. They are always playing catch up in the HD lineup. The Dmax has the most torque but only in 2nd-4th gears with the Allison. I would like to see that torque out of the hole and at freeway 5th gear RPM's. I know that all it takes is a little bit of PCM programming. I am sick of my neighbor telling me that his 6.0 powerstroke is faster and stronger than my Dmax. I do not dare call him on the carpet because I know that they are very close and from what I have heard the Stroker is a little quicker. I know the GM gassers reign supreme because I used to own a 99 silverado 5.3 and there was not a small block pickup out there that would touch it. I just want a reason for the lack of towing capacity and the "choked" down gears with the Dmax. I don't want to hear the tranny limp excuse either. I know for a fact that it is alot tougher than the Ford or the Dodge trannies.

I have a 2005 sales book with a tow chart in front of me. None of the 05 F250s of F350s are rated to tow 19200lbs. The highest tow rating for the whole series is 17000 and thats a V10 Superduty with 4.30s and 2wd. The highest rating for the diesel is 16600. You sure they didn't sneak an F450 into that commercial? :( The funny thing is I've seen it too and I remember them saying the rating was 19 something thousand lbs. I didn't pay much attention to it at the time but I'll look closer next time.

As far as gassers, I'd say GM is near the top for 1/2 tons. Alot of guys say the new Nissan V8 outtows all the other half-ton engines but I don't know a whole lot about them. The new 3v V10 6.8L makes more HP & Torque than the 8.1L and does it at the expense of engine speed peaks that are only slightly higher. The 8.1L 330hp@4200 is 450lb-ft@3200 and the new V10's is 362hp@4750 and 457@3250. Both of these engines make at least 400lb-ft under 2000rpm and that's pretty impressive for a stock gas engine.

Heard that ad too on the radio. Didn't pay much attention except distinctly heard 19,000 lbs+ towing. " Highest in it's class". I thought that seemed high. I'll listen hard for any disclaimers next time.

If you look at the SPEC sheet for the DRW F350 it is rated at 19,200 on the fifth wheel. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

Yep, it sure does. They must've made some changes since Ford printed the 05 Superduty brochure. The highest dually diesel rating according to it is with 4.10s and the weight is 16,700lbs.

According the chart on that link they've made the 4.30 axle available for the diesel and bumped the rating up to 19,200lbs! :(

The maximum tow rating for a V10 is 17,000lbs. :jester: The highest rating for the 8.1L is 16,100 according to the 04 guide.

Why does anyone care! It's almost like a personal attack if some other brand name makes a claim on TV. My truck pulls what I need to pull, and I'm not a bit threatened if Ford or Dodge or Toyota or Yugo can pull more. It's just a tool I use, not a personal statement of my macho-ness.

What's with this "Get a life" remark? :( Not any need to say that. This is discussion of a truck related subject and noone is acting negative or bragging. The guy just heard the numbers on a commercial and was trying to figure out the details.

Heck-I learned something I didn't know from some of the statements. Every brand has it's +'s and -'s and you buy what works best for you.

Hillhound,

Thanks for replying to this guy. HEY "Get a life" guy, this is a forum, these kind of topics get brought up all of the time. It was a legitamate question for the HD forum. If you don't like it, shut the h%^* up and don't reply. We don't need incompitent responses like that. Tow ratings make alot of difference when your talking 2500 lbs.

Yes folks let's keep things civil here. It was an honest question on a truck matter, and that's what we're here for. If he wants to know for sure what will tow what, there's nothing wrong with that. Nor is there anything wrong with expressing a desire for GM to get their ratings up as well.

The only combination that can tow 19,200# is a regular cab 2WD F-350 DRW with the "TowBoss" package, which requires the 6.0 PSD, the TorqueShift Automatic, the integral brake controller and 4.30 rear end gears. I don't think many will be built that way. The 4x4s top out at 16,500#, just about like the GMs.

With the 4.30 gears O/D will be about the same as a D/A with the O/D locked out, definately short geared for cruising empty (but if you want to cruise empty you shouldn't buy the ToeBoss :banghead: er, TowBoss package.)

GM will probably think about it for awhile, and then come out with their own 26,000# GCWR super tow package in a C3500 DRW with 4.56 gears, which will give them the edge (on paper) by a few hundred pounds since the C3500 weighs a little less than the F350. Almost nobody will buy that truck either, but they'll be able to make their "Best in Class" claim.
