Air Leak on Pass. Side

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else have the air leak problem on the passenger's side towards the top? I just got back from a 2500 mile trip and it drove me crazy. Anyone have a solution?

i had this happen on the drivers side about 2 weeks ago, drove me nuts, i tried re-closing the door a million times and inspected all the weather stripping.  eventually i gave up and said id take it in to the dealer the next day.  when i went to leave next morning it was gone, go figure.

I was just at the dealers this morning getting the oil changed and the tires rotated, no time to do it myself.  Saw a tech working on the passenger side 4th door or an extended cab, and he must have been trying to find an air leak because he had his flashlight out, the door closed and was inspecting the top weather stripping, didn't see what he did though.

Jp, I just wanted to post to bring this thread back to the top.

You have an awesome website and hopefully someone here can help you out.

The only thing that comes to mind that you might try is a little silicone on the door gaskets. I see that it is a Y2K and if you have not put silicone on there, you should of course.

I've got the same problem and I can tell you it's the front door, about a 1' section of weatherstripping doesn't seal towards the top of the door.  Hopefully I can get some pics tonight.  I was on the freeway yesterday going about 70 mph and it was only 10 degrees out.  I had the radio up all the way because the noise was so annoying. W/ the extreme cold it was beyond just a faint whistle, it was a howling noise.  On XMas my dad was in the truck and he pulled on the top of the door towards him and the noise stopped.  That's a temporary fix because after a few minutes most peoples arms would get tired.  The only thing that I can think of is adjusting th doors.

My 2001 Tahoe doesn't have a whistling sound.  But the rear passenger door has a rattle when I'm in a turbulent cross wind.  It will do it even when I'm stopped.  I think it is a seal someplace.

I had my rear quarter windows replaced also, and it helped alot!  But I still had some wind noise at the top, where the passenger door and 3rd door meet.  Part of the weather strip was a little loose in that area and kept sagging a little, so I used some adhesive on the inside channel of the weather stripping to hold it where it should be.  That helped, but the biggest thing I did to help was adjust the 3rd door upper latch.  It didn't take much movement at all.  I slide it in just barely.  One thing though, you have to remove the cover trim to get to the upper latch and I found out that the funky little clips that go in the headliner are pretty fragile.  I broke one.  It wasn't that big of a deal, because the trim wasn't loose or anything, but I wanted it fixed after messing with it.  My dealer tolad me you can't get just the clips, you had to order the whole trim piece and the clips came with it.  Good thing was it only cost around 12-13 dollars.  So now I have a spare upper latch cover and 1 spare clip.

Are you trying to tell me that when I looked at mine I shouldn't have just grabbed it and yanked it off?  I guess I'm lucky then that I didn't break it.  I'll look at my truck today and try adjusting the latch and the door to see if it helps.

I think I'll adjust the latch too. It annoys the crap out of me. I wish there was a way to adjust the ext-cab windows to pull them in tighter. All they need to do is come in just a hair and they would fit tight. Those latches on the windows are crap. I can't believe they used that design.

I've also thought about adjusting the striker on the passenger's door to see if that would pull the door in a little and stop the wind noise.

I wonder if replacing the weatherstripping would help? I know they get smashed after a while. They're only about $40, so I may try that if I can't get the striker in closer.

I love it, the truck is a constant project. Just when I was getting pissed at the truck. I'm motivated to work on it again.

Oh, did ya'll see my pictures of Taos, New Mexico? That's where I went for Christmas. I didn't put them all up, just a few to show how dirty the truck got.

She's all clean now!

LOL, yeah, I guess your lucky.  You know the little black clip thingy's I'm talking about?  I can't thing of how to explain them for anyone who hasn't seen them.  Half of it goes above the hole in the headliner and the other half goes below the hole and they snap together.  Then the tabs on the trim snaps into them.

On mine, one shattered into about 4 pieces, so I just left it loose for a couple weeks until I got a new one.

I'd like to be able to find some of those clips with out having to get the whole trim piece.

Jason, just checked out the pics.  I'd say your truck got pretty dang dirty.  Looks like you hit just about every type of weather possible.  Trust me, it's much worse living in a state where it snows 4 months out of the year.  After a while the dirty truck just doesn't bother you anymore.

Tom, if I get time to mess w/ it I'll get pics of what you're talking about so hopefully no one else will break theres.  I hope I can fix mine, the coler it gets the louder it gets in the cab.
