question for gm-tech or others

I have an 04 silverado 5.3l ext cab 4x4. I love the truck, it now has 14k on it. I have developed the driveline clunk. It's driving me nuts. I have read a lot of the posts here on the topic. My question is if I bring it to the dealer are they gonna do anything to help? I read one post where GM put a response that this was normal and no action is needed. What is the general accepted belief to what the problem is?

Does anybody have a fix for this? And are we all talking about the same clunks. My truck makes so many different noises, depending on the situation, and I've always heard "normal, normal, normal" from the dealer. Some folks grease a slip yoke that sounds good until the first time it shifts, switching to the autotrack transfercase fluid was an early attempt to remedy the driveline clunk...now it's just real expensive dealer only stuff that we have to use...or else who knows what kind of catostrophic failure that the transfer case may experience. I've had silicone pads installed on my leaf springs to fix a slapping noise, the trans logic has been reflashed to work on the driveline clunk, the list goes on.

But the truck keeps going, I just keep driving it...may be noisy, but it is a truck. I just keep installing performance mods for me to fixate on to try to keep my mind off of the OEM issues....(one last time...what did your vavlesprings sound like after your cam install?...J/K :seeya: )

When I went in for the tailgate cable recall, they ordered the new slip yoke for me. It took about a month to get in, the dealer said it was on backorder?

Anyways like I said after a month they call me and in one hour my truck has a brand new slip yoke and u-joint.

Changed it in December sometime, and so far no noise.

It should be warranteed and the dealer said there was a technical service bulletin on it, but sorry, don't know the number of the TSB or the specifics, just that it's supposed to fix a "squawk" noise. Yep, that's the word wriiten on my receipt.

Here's the first part of one TSB on a driveline clunk/squawk. Not sure if this is what you have or if it's something different...

Condition

Some customers may comment on a clunk, bump or squawk noise when the vehicle comes to a stop or when accelerating from a complete stop.

Cause

A slip/stick condition between the transfer case output shaft and the driveshaft slip yoke may cause this condition.

Diagnostic Tips

There are several resources in the electronic Service Information System which can provide the technician with information on diagnosis and repair of clunk conditions, and fix the customer's vehicle right the first time without unnecessary parts replacement. Some of the documents available in SI include:

• Symptoms - Propeller Shaft (SI Document ID #697266)

• Knock or Clunk Noise (SI Document ID #697290)

• Rear Drive Axle Noises (SI Document ID #700580)

• Launch Shudder/Vibration on Acceleration (Replace Propeller Shaft and Install a New Pinion Flange/Seal), Bulletin #02-04-17-001

• Information on 2-3 Upshift or 3-2 Downshift Clunk Noise, Bulletin #01-07-30-042

• Driveline Clunk When Stopping (Reprogram Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Bulletin #03-07-30-028

Correction

Replace the rear drive shaft slip yoke with a new nickel-plated slip yoke. See the parts table below.

those are the exact symptoms that i have. Only when i come to a stop, or accelerate from a stop. I'll make an appointment tomorrow. Thank you.

SO on a '98 which is way out of warranty, will they fix it for free b/c of the TSB? or is it just a bulletin to help them diagnose it easier?

It's just information. It doesn't imply any extension of your warranty. Expect to pay on a 1998 vehicle.

Here are all the part numbers. I didn't include them because it's in a table and it doesn't cut and paste well into one of these messages. Hope you can make sense of it...
