Is this probelm apparent in the 2000 models?

Yes, there have been people with 2000's with this problem.

My '99 didn't have any problem until close to 20,000 miles and the dealer replaced it with no problem or questions asked.  I've got a little over 5,000 miles in this intermetiate shaft with no noise or movement.

I have an early 2000 (3-door) Z71 and I had mine replaced around 25,000 miles, I now have 45,000 miles with no re-accurrring problems.

I too have a 2000 3 door, and had mine replaced. Not sure about the mileage, but had no problems since with the steering shaft.
