I have a 2001 2500HD with 8.1, allison and 3.73 axle and I have an axle seal out and napa says they need to know my ring gear size to get the seal can anyone tell me how to find out the size? And does any one know how to tell if you have a floating or semi-floating axle?

Any schmoe behind the NAPA counter would be able to figure that one out. You have a HEAVY DUTY truck = you have a full-floating axle.

since you have the big block, you have the 14-bolt, 11.5" full floater rear axle.

Since you have an 8.1L you have an 11.5” ring gear. The Napa electronic parts catalog should know that by engine options but it is only as smart as the monkey working the keyboard.

In the 01” and later 2500HDs, the Duramax and 8.1L get the 11.5” full floating rear axle and 6.0L gets the 10.5” full floating rear axle.

The 1500HD or light duty 2500 with a GVWR less than 9400lbs has the 9.5” Semi-floating rear axle.
