Scratch on windshield from rock or salt

Recommended Posts

The other day, during a snowstorm, a rock or something got stuck under my wipers and put a scratch in my windshield, in a 1/2 circle design, as the rock stayed with the wiper as it cleared the window.

It doesn't feel deep, so I'm wondering if there's a good way to polish it out. Are there products I can buy, or can a glass shop get it out? It seems crazy to replace the windshield for this, but it is right in my line of sight, so it's rather annoying.

Thanks.

Thanks for replying. There's really nothing to fill in. You can barely feel it.

I actually had a chip fixed a year or so ago. The repair was adequate, but not ideal. Sounds like at this point, I should get the windshield replaced, as it also has 3-4 other chips in it. But I think I'll wait till Spring now. You know what would happen: I'd get it replaced during the winter, and it would just happen again the next day.

If it's the full length of the wiper sweep, it would take hours to buff out, and a shop would charge about as much as replacement. If it's that marked up already with other chips and such, just get it replaced.

I dont think there is much to do about it. I know the windshield on my 04 has been pitted to all hell since I bought it (it was a demo so I dont know why it is this way) and several others at the dealer were the same way. I asked a glass place about it and they said the labor involved with anything like removing them would exceed the cost of a new windshield. I dont know about your insurance regs, but you might consider chipping it and then making a claim. I do not condone insurance fraud by any means, but it seems as though your windshield was legitimately damaged so why not get it replaced, even if you have to make it more obvious.
