Engine code, what is it and how do i fix it?

My "service engine soon" light has come on periodically as of late so I got a code reader and scanned the system and got code 1416. Which the scanner said is the "secondary air injection system".

Is this for sure what that code represents?

If so, what is the secondary air injection system?

And, what do I need to fix so it will stopp throwing this code?

Keep in mind that every time the engine light has come on, there has been no noticeable differance in performance what so ever. So do I need to fix something, if so what, or can i just erase the code?

Thanks

My truck is a 2000 GMC Sierra, extra cab, 5.3 with 65k miles. The only modifications are a cat back system and a Volant intake.

That code on your truck means that one 02 sensor isn't registering any change in the air/fuel ratio when the electric smog pump is running. Unless you're a competent do it yourselfer and willing to obtain the necessary shop manual information then you should take it to a competent repair facility.

All you can do without good diagnostic info, tools, and skills is examine the components visually. The electric smog pump is located on the passenger side wheel well cover near the firewall. Check that all the electrical connectors are good and tight and that all air tubing is sealed and not kinked, pinched, or collapsed on it's way to each exhaust manifold.
