III has several improvements over II, but you shouldn't have any problems with II. How do you know they put in II? Is that what they said? That's what the invoice said?

 

I would suspect that if they're getting it in bulk, as most dealerships do, I wouldn't be surprised if they just don't know what they're really getting.

From what I've read, you can't even get Dexron-II any more. I checked in my shop and I have one really old bottle of -II from about 10 years ago. All the stuff I've bought in the last 5 years has been -III. Yeah, I know, I gotta get that tranny seal fixed in the ol' GMC! (That would save on dry sweep for the driveway too...) :D

It was writen on the invoice as, part#702430-Dexron II, Qty-4

 

I suspect this is just a hard coded part of the description for when a tranny fluid change/flush is done and they haven't updated the description in a number of years. You might want to ask them.

Automaker to Upgrade ATF Specs

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) Saying that many automatic transmission fluids today are inadequate to meet its service life and performance goals, General Motors this week unveiled a significant upgrade to its Dexron III ATF specification.

 

The move will force ATF formulators and blenders to undergo a costly round of testing in order to obtain upgraded Dexron III "H" licenses, and will probably force most ATF manufacturers to use Group II and II-plus base oils in their products.

 

In a presentation Monday to the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association, GM staff project engineer Roy Fewkes said the new tests and limits for the upgrade should be implemented by year end, and Dexron III "H" licensing could begin as early as spring 2003. No new "G" licenses will be issued once "H" licensing begins, but current "G" licensees will have a reasonable period -- about one year -- to convert to the new formulations.

 

Fewkes stressed that the upgrade, although significant, is not the "step-change" that would require introducing Dexron IV, because some current products, including GM factory-fill ATF, already meet the upgraded spec. But all ATF sold in the service fill market will have to undergo testing to demonstrate compliance with the upgrade.

 

In looking at current ATF formulations, Fewkes explained, GM saw numerous products it calls "inadequate" for its requirements. Primarily, the difference in these fluids seemed to be driven by base stock selection, not the additive chemistry. Group II-based ATFs generally outperformed those using Group I oils, he noted.

 

"Now that the formulations of many ATFs have changed to using Group II base oils, we're seeing that the failure mode for these fluids is not due to oxidation, but because the friction system fails," Fewkes noted.

 

He believes that the new specification will drive formulators to use more Group II and II-plus base stocks, while "the Group I stocks will be the ones that disappear from these formulations.

 

"This change won't eliminate any basic additive chemistries," he told the group. "Our approach is primarily formula-driven, not chemistry-driven."

 

Reaction from ILMA members focused immediately on the testing costs that the new licenses will create.

 

Currently, most ATF formulation and testing costs are borne by the additive manufacturers, who qualify a particular additive package in a specific base stock -- a so-called "original" formulation. Lube manufacturers then must buy those specific qualified ingredients to make their ATF, and must pay to test their "reblend" of this identical formulation. One lube company owner estimated that a reblend test regimen costs approximately $30,000, and an additive company representative indicated that the "original" test costs can be two to three times that.

 

GM's Jim Linden was uncertain what the testing costs are, but said he does not believe the "H" test costs will differ significantly from today.

 

Tests for the new "H" licenses will include a low-speed friction test; a cycling test to measure shift durability; a plate friction test to run 150 hours instead of the current 100; a band friction test; an extended GM oxidation test to run 50 percent longer (to 450 hours); and a newly developed air entrainment test. A new slate of seal materials will also be used in seal compatibility testing.

 

Licensing fees for the upgrade will still be $3,000 per year for an active license and $750 for the inactive.

    • Its just that it worked on 2024 trucks on this forum and my 2025 model truck, unless GM did something since that point to screw up access or Autel has a bad update. I haven't had need to use my tool since last year when I did the changes to the placard pressure settings and since then I updated the software on my Autel but have not plugged into the OBD so hard to say if I would get a surprise as well.    All I know last year when I bought the Autel I was warned to be sure to update it before I tried using the unit as they said who knows how long ago unit itself was actually manufactured as the software could be way out of date. 
    • And so you had gone through the process of registering and updating the tool and so on ?. All I can say is that on the front page as the tool fires up you go to advanced mode, then vehicle model comes up and you choose Silverado ( not the DRW or EV  since your a single rear wheel ) , then I think its choice 2 which is 07/2021 - 12/2026 ( 433mhz 13542523 ) as that is the series of tpms sensors and then go down to choice 5 which is tire type/pressure selection. Hit yes and it says to connect to OBD port and turn ignition on.    Having said this, I updated the software in my tool lately and these year range choices look different from the past due to them doing some updates it would appear and I have not connected up to the OBD port since last year so hopefully I am not in for a surprise with them screwing up the software and that it won't work on my truck anymore either.    So my question is, when you plugged into the OBD and started your truck it had that message on the Autel screen "vehicle not supported" ?. That does seem odd as tire shops would be pissed right off if hey can't use their tool on the model year after mine that in theory is supposed to be much the same truck ... unless GM did some change in the computer system to block certain things from access. 
    • Understanding and using modern scan tools is its own body of knowledge. I had little hope that would work...programming access to the BCM is probably required and that is not easy for us consumers. Expensive scan tool, GM programming subscription, online authentication, etc.   It also may be a matter of finding the right dealer to program it for you. Flashing a modern BCM might be a little too advanced for most tire shops.
    • Update for anyone following:    Installed everything as shown in diagram. Opted for 8 AWG from Battery Positive to a 50A resettable inline breaker. 8 AWG is tied into to 2x 12 AWG wires feeding a 6 way fuse bus in parallel (manufacturer’s design of what I purchased).    4 of the 6 fuses available for circuits are tied to terminal 30 of each relay. I tied a jumper from one of my spare circuits off the bus to terminal 86 of each relay. The trigger, terminal 85, was pulled from my interior by way of T-Taps from the X61A-X5 pins 10, 11, 17 and 23. This was the hardest part of the job. Even with the X61A unbolted and the X5 removed - there was VERY little wiggle room.  I added back up lights that I want to come on with my cargo lamp - but when I would check continuity between S48A-X1 pin 18 to its respective landing point on the X61A-X5 it triggers the factory relay… Instead I opted for a add-a-fuse on the passenger interior fuse panel (fuse location 10 - cargo lamp) and ran it through the boot on the driver side to my load. Did this to avoid introducing any electrical gremlins.   Note: Please check for continuity between the S48A-X1 and the X61A-X5. In my case wire colours were not the same as other’s who have posted. To do a continuity check you need a Multimeter. Completely disassemble the S48A-X1 and remove the brown face plate off the X61A-X5 by way of a flat head screwdriver - this was the only way I could get any results.   The outputs, terminal 87 of the relays, were fed into a junction box and landed at Individual studs and were labelled Aux 1-4.    At this point, all you need to do is run wire to your loads and bring them to ground. I created a negative bus in the engine bay, all my negatives land here.    For anyone having issues with all of your new aux switch lights coming on with the press of one - I noticed this only to be an issue when the battery wasn’t hooked up to my relays? No idea why, but it was quickly corrected by having my system buttoned up and functional.     
    • Well I ordered the Autel ts508, and it won't work on my truck I tried all the 2023 and everything it just says vehicle not supported lol   I'm able to send this unit back, so I'm going to do that, then I'll just stop into a some tire shops and if none of them are able to do it, I guess ill have to spend a bunch of money to get a good scanner..... Thanks GM lol
