Used Seafoam today....

Pulled the vac. line off the brake booster and sucked the whole can in. Let it sit about a half hour then went for a drive. All I can say is my truck was sssmmmmooooooooooooooooooooookkiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. :wtf:

After a few miles, it seemed to clear up and everything is normal now. Not sure if it helped or not, but it didn't hurt anything. First time I have done anything like this and it has 88k on the clock.

It's a top end cleaner/carbon remover.

mcreyaufmiller, AutoZone carries it around here. If you have a local AtouZone ask them about it.

There was a guy a while back who said he used the Seafoam and the next day his engine was knocking like a Jehovas Witness. I haven't seen any new updates from him, but he said it was quiet until he put that stuff in. I am leary of putting something in the engine that seems to be that strong. :chevy:

:chevy: Now that was funny!

Well, I too am very worried about anything I put in my truck. Once upon a time I added some Slick50 engine treatment in the crankcase of an 86 Jeep and within 50 miles it died. So when I bought my truck new, I vowed never to put anything in there but synthetic oil! So although you can put Sea Foam in the gas tank and put some in the crankcase and run it a few minutes before doing an oil change, I would suggest just spraying the spray-version thru the throttle body or sucking the liquid-version directly into the manifold via a vacuum hose.

If you peer inside the throttle body and run your finger in there, you'd be amazed at the amount of oily sludge is in there... at least there is with mine. The Sea Foam spray and a rag will make it like new. I've used it thousands of miles ago and never had a problem (knock on wood). Now I use it as preventative maintenance.

A few months ago, I got a thing in the mail from the dealership I bought my truck from. It was a letter saying because they like me so much I could get a free oil change. Well it was due so I bit. They did the oil and when the guy gave me the paperwork he has 3 things written on it: 1) needs power steering fluid flushed $120.00 2) Needs brake fluid flushed $100.00 3) Needs top end cleaner $90.00. I tell him GM does not reccomend power steering flushes, brake fluid was flushed a year ago, the only thing I couldn't counter was the top end cleaner. He showed me a phamplet with before and after pictures of a valve. Before it looked like it came from a '72 Vega, after the treatment it looked like it came right out of the parts bin. I said I would think about it. I doubt the treatment could do that, would Seafoam be a cheaper alternative?

Ahh, the old 72 Vega valve trick. THOSE B&STARDS!

I love it when they do that. Yes, I would go the route of Sea Foam before spending $90. Let your engine gulp it down thru the vacuum hose and the quickly cut the ignition. Let it sit for a good while... 10 or 20 minutes to let it eat at the caked junk.

(The next time I'm bored I may go to the junk yard and get a valve out of an old beater. If I can find one fully caked like the pictures, I'd soak it in Sea Foam for 5 minutes and then hit it with a torch to see what that does.)

If there is someone who has direct knowledge of what the $90 GM Top End Cleaning process is, PLEASE post it here! It wouldn't suprise me if they add a can of injector cleaner to the tank and then pat ya on the back. But my rational side sez they may actually squirt 12oz of go-go juice into the intake.

I believe what are sellin is sucking a can into a vacuum line. OR you can mix it 10% cleaner and 90% gas and put it into a pressurized canister that connects to the fuel rail. Disable the fuel pump and it does a great job on the injectors. The vacuum route does nothing to clean the injectors.

? for all of you. Just found a can here in town and will be using it this weekend. My ? is when you first put it in the engine via the brake vac hose, is you engine to be warm or cold?

And how much due you put in, i've read from a full can to 2/3 can. Truck as 112K and has never had this done before.

Thanks

Its a multi stage process.

There is cleaner run through the injectors, but the main work is the sparkplugs are removed and a cleaner is poured into the cylinders and then let set for a while to clean carbon buildup off the tops of pistons and cylinder walls.

They then run the engine a bit and then flush oil and replace.

Better path is I have a water injection kit, this not only cleans out the cylinders and then keeps it and intake clean.

Added to that is the WI rids the ping, prevents loss of timing and even allows via the PCM tuned to run higher PE/WOT timing for HP and Tq gains. Also allows for a higher rev limiter set.

Did my truck today, 1 can through the vacuum hose, 1/2 can in the tank, 1/2 can in the engine oil. let it sit for about 30 minutes while I cleaned the Throttle Body, then started it up and smoked out the neighborhood. When I returned, I changed the oil (Mobil 1 of course) and adjusted the valves. Now the truck has no valbe noise (not to sure about the method though, remove the lash and add a full turn) but it runs quiet (except for the FM) and is quick off the line. I replaced the plugs using the Bosch P2 (second set I have bought) and the truck runs GREAT!!!!!!
