Ordering Truck - Advertising Charge?

Recommended Posts

Bids are starting to come in from a few of the dealers I sent my specs in to.  Funny thing :  two of the dealers so far have itemized a $440.00 charge for ADVERTISING!  On a truck that I am ordering from the factory! (and which, thus, will be pre-paid and won't need to be 'advertised').

I'm not too worried, as I intend to negotiate it away, but you wonder why they even try. But what's next - will they charge me for wear-and-tear for walking on their linoleum floor?

Ithink if you wear white soled sneakers they can't make you pay for wear and tear to their floor.  LOL

But seriously,  the advertising fee is standard.  Sometimes you can get out of it, but it is actually a fee that every dealer has to pay to GM from every vehicle sold to cover all the cool commercials you see and hear.

Alot of dealers will pay that out of their 3% dealer holdback, but if the deal is pretty lean, then it wouldn't surprise me if they tack it back on.

Just my thoughts from past experiances...

I hope you get your new truck ordered soon!!!

I didnt pay it.  Dealership i bought from didnt charge that

Also dont pay for no processing fee or prep fee.

All i paid for was the cost of the truck.  I boughtmine in a small town so i think the buying experience was alot better

Also if they put a sticker on your tailgate why dont you charge them an ad fee since you are driving around with a sticker from their dealership

I don't disagree...  My dad told the dealer when he bought his '78 Caprice, to take the sticker off the backend or knock another $50 off...  (they took another $50 off).

Shaners is right...advertising is not the dealers fault, it is GM's (or Dodge or Ford or any other).  They charge the dealership.  IF you can get the dealer to go into their holdback money then you've done a good job.  The funny part of the whole "what can I buy the truck/car for" discussion is that if EVERYONE got the dealer to sell for exactly what they paid then there would be no dealers.  They have to earn a living.  Its just that no one wants to be the one contributing to it!

Advertising, hah!  Just another word for profit.  Just like the dealer my son and I talked to yesterday.  If we didn't buy one of the units they have on their lot, he implied there might be a charge for them to locate one and pick it up.  The first sign I look for is whether a dealer puts those "rider" stickers beside the factory stickers - the ones that add $499 for a useless "protection package" and other such profit boosters.  They can then throw in the useless paint and fabric protection and "save" you $500.  A reputable dealer doesn't play these games.  I will now step down from my soap box.

WHAT???  :notice:

When my parents were buying a blazer the dealership didnt have one they wanted.  They did find one about 50 miles away that just arrived off the truck.  The dealer did a swap with the other dealer and didnt charge them extra.  That is a BS charge.  The dealer traded an impala (they were popular at the time) for their blazer

The dealers need to be smacked upside their heads or slapped with a IM STUPID sticker on the front of their shirts

All GM dealers are charged 1% of msrp before freight for advertising from the factory. Most dealers are also charged a additional 1/2 to 2% To help defray the cost of advertising. The additional amount is determined by the dealer ,if the money is not used the factory keeps it.THE IMPORT CARS HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND NO ONE COMPLAINED ABOUT IT THEY JUST PAID LIST PRICE FOR THE CARS AND WERE HAPPY TO DRIVE A FOREIGN CAR.Also next time you go to the store when you at the check out tell them your not going to pay the amount on the regester because they are charging you more than what they paid for it.

From my been there, seen it file....you are right about the "protection package" and the "scotch guard".....they are WAY overcharging for generally useless stuff....however, just ask and they pretty much drop it drastically.....the dealer trade is another issue..dont fool yourself that all the dealers are in together..it does cost to trade vehicles..at a minimum you have to pay a driver to go get it..if it is a popular vehicle the dealer who has it wants it to make money off of....your dealer wants it for you....he better have something good to trade.....dealers do NOT have to trade....you can locate it all day long but if the sales manager wants it to stay so he can sell it, it will stay.

I had the same experience.  I've just ordered my truck, and the invoice had a $300 advertising charge over the base and options.  Then when I looked in the itemized options category, there was another $250 charge for advertising.  I couldn't talk them out of charging me for it, but I did get them to drop one of the charges (the lower $250 of course) simply because I convinced them that charging me for it once was punishment enough.  Watch for this.  I think it's automatically appended to the invoices by the software they use and I would guess that most dealers would be willing not to charge you twice for advertising.

would'nt it be something if the next time you went to Mcdonalds the price for a cheeseburger was $.99 plus $.10 for advertisement? so basically someone with inexpierience in dealing with car dealers would get screwed and pay all that advertisement? come on! advertisement is all ready in there! you pay $30,000+ for a truck, trust me...some where in there is advertisment without adding an extra $200-$400 to the buyer. Its GM's way of getting us (the consumer) to pay for thier advertisment. its an acceptable way to surcharge the consumer.

GUYS,  The  advertising charge is for real on ALL

new vehicles.  Ask to see the invoice ..its there.

Its for real...

I am pretty lucky as a GM employee buyer.......

We ARE NOT charged the adv. fees !!!!

I don't know how it works for ford x plan or

chrysler employees...If they have to pay it

or not.  Anybody know ???????.........Geo

Another thing that gets my goat.

Shipping fees on new vehicles !!!!

Let say a new GM truck made in INdiana

(near Ryan!).

Shipping fee is the exact same price if the

truck is delivered near the plant in  Indiana

or California or Syracuse NY !!!!

Weird huh?

THE DESTINATION CHARGE IS THE SAME  FOR EVERYONE BECAUSE IF I LIVE IN TEXAS AND I GET A TAHOE (WHICH ARE MADE IN TEXAS AND WISCONSIN)  AND MY NEIGHBOR GETS ONE TOO WE'LL BOTH GET THE SAME DEST. CHARGE EVEN THOUGH IF MINE IS BUILT IN TX AND HIS IN WI.

THE ADVERTIZING FEE IS ON THE INVOICE AND IS A LEGIT CHARGE FROM US. WE CHARGE THE DEALERS FOR IT AND THEY IN TURN CHARGE THE CUSTOMER.  FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW A DEALER ISN'T YOUR FRIEND...ITS A STORE WHERE THEIR LIVLEY HOOD DEPENDS ON SELLING VEHICLES FOR THE MOST THEY CAN FEASABLY GET FOR THEM  AND IF IT'S A SPECIALTY VEHICLE LEKE THE DENALI OR THE H2 EXPECT TO PAY A PREMIUM FOR IT.

shipping fee dont get me started

The truck was built about 25 miles from the dealership and i had to pay $665.  It took less than 30 min for it to leave the factory and get to the dealership.  By the way a wk prior to my truck being built they uped the price from $640 to $665.  The dealer being a nice guy didnt charge me the extra $25 cause i complained.
