Welcome Andrew,

Have you considered a new hood?  There are some pretty nice fiberglass ram-air hoods on the market, and yes, they are totally functional.

To do your mod otherwise you'll need a rather large funnel shaped intake tube that is somehow exposed...  I'm not sure where you'd mount such a thing.  Remember the longer the tube and the more bends in it, then the more "drag" and the less efficient your system will be.  Any time the air has to travel a long distance or around corners it will lose velocity.

Maybe you might want to consider an FIPK???

I have thought about the new hood, but I have two issues.  One, my truck is a 95 and the red has deepened a bit, so getting a paint job to really match it would cost a little eh?  And two, how much do those hoods run?  You also mentioned the FIPK.  that's a K&N deal right?  I have heard through pacific-audio that people like the home made deals better.  Have you heard otherwise?   Let me know what you think?  Thanks for the help

I don't know how much a hood would cost but I imagine by the time you get it painted you'd have $700-$800 in it.  A good body shop can match your paint perfectly.  I liked the FIPK I had on my '00 Silverado, and it was  obvious that it opened up the breathing alot...

Remember, if you build your own ram air intake it needs to have an upward turn and some drain holes so water doesn't get forced past the fliter and into the carb on rainy days.

Check out how the Camaro SS or Trans Am WS6 hood actually route the air.
