Having Trouble Kicking Over

The past few days I have had a problem with my truck not wanting to kick over. If I drive and park it for appx 30-60 min and try and start it again it will just crank and crank and wont turn over. Sometimes it will but the pms will stay very low and it will die. After trying it a second time itll start right up. I have had this happen about 3 times so far since the end of last week. Any ideas??? Battery going bad??? Truck is 5 yrs old and has 55K miles

It's not the battery. If the engine is cranking at a reasonable speed, it can't be the battery.

 

I assume no dashboard lights?

 

It could be a host of things, but most would set off a dash light.

 

When's the last time you changed out the fuel filter? I am leaning towards fuel pump/pressure/filter.

(FYI... if it's cranking, then by definition it is turning over.)

Fuel Filter was changed last August at 48K miles. I now have almost 55K miles.

Sounds like your fuel pressure regulator. If there is fuel in the vacuum line, that's what the problem is.

I'd guess the FPR as well. I posted on this previously somewhere here. My truck last fall was having trouble starting when you first when to turn the key. When I'd let off and crank it again it'd start right up. A few months back, it seemed like it was running rough after starting when idling, then smoothed out once you gave it gas and got moving. It then did the starting issue again. I took it to the dealer and left it overnight. They looked at the FPR and it was dry, indicating no problem. Well they were checking out some other issues and moved the truck later in the day. They checked the FPR again later and found moisture, indicating a part failure.

I had it squared away at the dealer under my extended warranty. The invoice shows an "FP Number" of 89017453 for the Regulator, and a price of $84.77. The description is a Reg Kit 3.330.

Last night it started right up so we will see. Hope I dont get stranded labor day weekend.

 

I looked in the manual last night and it doesnt lookt o hard to change. Am I correct in my assumption?

Ok new twist. Today after going to menards parked my truck in the driveway. Few hrs later went to pull it in the garage and when I turned the key I had a horrible screech noise. Similar noise as if you tried to start the truck when it was already running. HMMM I am now leaning towards the alternator? Should an alternator be hot to the touch after strating a truck and pulling it in a garage??? Cant say I ever really noticed

That screech noise is usually caused by the starter attempting to engage with the engine already turning over, causing it to grind gear teeth. If you're getting it when the truck isn't running, might want to check to see if there is some damage in that area..
