Black smoke...

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine was behind me the other day and said he noticed some black smoke when i first take off, and maybe when I go full throttle while im cruising. (LIke riding at 40 and flooring it)

Also, i would like to know if flooring your truck while cruising at say 40 will hurt the tranny or the engine?

Thanks!

Flooring it from a roll is easier than flooring it off the line, but if it's stock, neither is terribly bad. Just don't exceed redline !!

About the smoke, has your mileage dropped or changed recently ?? How many miles ??

MrQuad... 41000 miles and I havent noticed a drastic change in my gas milage, although I only checked it for the first time two days ago. (I don't have the electronic system for gas milage, I had to fill up and calculate it myself, lol) I'm getting 12, when i semi-baby it. Seems like I should be getting more like 14? IDK though...

I assumed that black smoke was really nothing to be conserned about because if anything it is just carbon being burnt off, like on our tractors around the farm, when they work hard they blow black smoke (gas tractors too). Blue smoke i do know is no good, but im only getting black for now.

Thanx!

Yeah, black is generally running rich or burning off carbon. Do you usually baby it, but got after it when your bud was around ?? I've gotten vehicles from like my folks or my in-laws, and with me driving it, it'll blow smoke for the first couple days till it cleans up most of the carbon build-up. Then it doesn't smoke anymore.

12 does seem a little low, but not unreasonably so. When my O2s went out on my Jeep, the sucker was blowing BIG smoke and my mpgs dropped to around 4~6mpg :chevy: !!!!

Any codes ??

12MPG is typical for a 2500HD with the 6.0L for city type driving, highway milage will be higher you might see 14 or 15. it's the 4.10 rear gears the keep the milage low. You are correct that black smoke is not much to worry about, but I would say excessive smoke (i.e. more often than not) there is a problem.
