Transmission overheating scenario

Hey GM-Tech,

I was wondering if you could tell me if the '05 1500 silverado tranny's have a built safety feature for overheating? I have been debating on getting a new cluster with a built in transmission temperature gauge. But, I am not going to spend the money if the truck will tell me that the tranny is in fact, overheating. I didn't know if the cluster would indicate it or maybe a gear would get locked out. Thanks in advance!!

According to my dad's 2002 GMC Sierra Manual (he's at work, i cant be sure) ...im pretty sure the message center at least tells you something about the transmission overheating.

 

I dunno if its just a recent thing, or with all 99-present...because i'm in the exact same dilema as you are...i'd add a tranny temp cluster if it isnt gunna tell me its overheating, but if it is...screw it...i'll just use my trusty message center.

Indeed i was right...straight from my 99 Silverado Manual...

 

MESSAGE CENTER MESSAGES:

 

"TRANS FLUID HOT"

 

If you have an automatic transmission, you have a transmission temp warning display contained in the message center. If the tranny fluid temp becomes high, the message center will display "TRANS FLUID HOT"/ When the transmission enters the protection mode, you may notice a change in transmission shifting patterns. When the transmission fluid temp returns to normal, the display will turn off and the transmission shifting patterns will return to normal.

This message is displayed when the PCM detects a transmission fluid temperature (TFT) equal to or greater than 130°C (266°F) for 5 seconds.

 

Trans Hot...Idle Engine

 

This message is displayed when the PCM detects a TFT equal to or greater than 135°C (275°F).
