fuel fill up problem

I have trouble every time I fill up my 04 suburban. I get somewhere between .50 to $1.00 and the pump clicks off like it is full, and this continues. I have tried other stations and still the same thing. Anyone else have this problem?

Gas tank may be vapor-locked. There is a solenoid-actuated valve that allows vapors out of the gas tank so that fuel can enter. If the valve gets stuck shut or breaks, the thing won't take any gas until you can relieve the pressure. Not really sure how its set up on a 'burb, saw it happen on an Impala this summer, but on the Impala there was a hose coming off the tank, and when we disconnected it, there was a rush of air and all the gas in the fuel filler neck flowed into the tank.

 

You may need to replace the valve and the box into which the vapors go (not sure what its called).

 

I would start by seeing if you can get at the hoses on top of the tank from under the 'burb, may be kind of difficult. On the Impala all we had to do was pull a piece of metal out of the trunk =).

 

You are sure theres no gas and its not just a shot sending unit though right?

I have the identical problem with my avalanche. Since the burb & Avy share the same platform I'm not surprised. I've been freezing my butt off this winter trying to get my tank full. I think it is nothing more than gasoline backing up in the filler nozzle. Bad design imo.

I have had the same problem in the past with my truck. It has not done it in a long time but is very annoying when it does. What I find helpful is to back the nozzle out of the filler hole some - almost to where it is barely even in. While it is somewhat of a pain to do because you have to hold the nozzle, it does click off as fast.

This works for me too. Some pumps I think pump faster than others. Occassionally when I fill up I will either pull the nozzle out a bit or go down one click on the trigger.

Have the same problem on my government truck and like was stated earlier, just back off of the nozzle one click... This has always worked for me...

With those posting that you have similar problems, a word of caution. Turn your face away from the filler as you first loosen and remove the cap, fuel can spray in your face from the pressure.

 

With vapor recovery pumps (california and others) you have to wait a little bit after placing the nozzle in.

 

Other problem could be....if you are in the habit of pumping that bit more fuel in after the autostop, such as rounding up the dollar amount or gallon reading, that extra fuel actually back fills and saturates the vapor recovery (carbon canister) on the truck and doesn't "reclaim" the fuel vapor in the tank thus creating vapor pressure inside the tank shutting off way early the nozzle.

The only time I have this issue is at stations in Missouri where they have the vapor catchers on the nozzle.
