2002 5.3 298hp!?

I have been reading some things on the internet that says the 2002 5.3 has more power then the 2000 and 2001 5.3.  I saw someone mention they took the ?EGR? valve off for 2002 and put a new cam in the engine.  I also read that people that have driven both a 01 and a 02 5.3 say the 02 is quicker.  They say its like the difference between the 1999 5.3 and the 2000 5.3.

I have a 2002 Silverado with the 5.3l Vortec and it's listed hp rating is 285. Less than the 298 your talking about, but still plenty of power to move the truck down the road.

Mine is rated at the 285.  It does feel a bit peppier than my '99 2wd, but there was a horspower increase since '99.  Maybe the 298 is rating for '03???

Interesting.  There were some rumor posts floating around some of the other pickup forums about GM's engines getting nice HP and Torque boosts for 2003.  Many of them put the three small-block V8s (6.0,5.3,4.8) each getting a 15hp boost and a torque increase.

That would mean the current 5.3L would go to 300hp and maybe around 340lbft torque and hopefully the mileage will be practically the same.  It's all rumors right now, but I don't think that increase will be too far off the mark.  This would be just in time to compete with Ford's upgrade of the 5.4L and maybe Dodge's instroduction of their new engine options.  We'll see....

Sorry, I should have also put that people are saying it is undeclared hp.  But I don't think GM is one to not brag about getting more hp.  But then again if it was something as simple as a cam change they might not want to change all the manuals and whatever else when production of 02's is almost done?  Who knows! A dyno is the way to tell ;)

Isnt the new 5.3 suppose to be the new version based on the same technolgy that is in the 4.2 inline six?  I believe GM is going to offer that in the extended length version of the Trailblazer and Envoy.  I know my 4.2 puts out 270 hp and 275flb torque, so adding the variable exhuast and dual cams in a 5.3 it should easily get 298+, I would think.

I read about a year ago that they were planning on putting the Corvette camshaft in the truck motors.  They come down the same assembly line anyway.  I'm guessing this will happen for the 2003 models allong with some other minor modifications to the drivetrain.

But some people are saying it is already happening for the 2002's.

Tungsten,

I actually stopped by the Chevy dealer where I bought my truck at.  Believe it or not, I was going to take a 2002 5.3L for a drive just to see if I noticed any difference and then humbly report the findings back to this thread! :D

I ran into a problem-the only 5.3Ls on the lot were 3.73s and since I have a 4.10 it would have been impossible for me to do an accurate comparison in a truck with a different gears! :idontgetit:   I'm not so sure I could've noticed the differnce anyway but it gave me an excuse to check out some new trucks! :D   Maybe someone else can give it a try.  The salesman said noone wants 4.10s in their 1/2 tons so they don't order many.

My dad has a 2000 5.3 with 3.73's same as me,  So maybe i'll steal his truck for a day and take it to the track, then take my 02 to the track, but not yet I only have 300miles on her! ;)
