How to tell if my truck is a Z71

Hello all! I just bought a 1997 GMC 1500 Sierra. I know it has 4 wheel drive, but is it a Z71. Before you all tell me to look at the side of my truck, here's the problem; it was repainted and there is nothing on the truck but the emblems. I think the 4x4 decal or Z71 decal got painted over or removed. How can I tell??? Thanks.

RPO codes maybe that you can look up though this site, and if i recall the Z71 has the added skid plates

There was a similar thread started today in another group on this forum, it involved a little bit older truck but the info is still applicable I believe...

Check for skid plates underneath and a tow package.

Those were optional on non z71 equipped trucks :D

One other item to check for is the Eaton Gov-Lock Limited Slip Differential. It will be identified on the sticker in the glove box, that's the only "build sheet" type identification that sticks (no pun intended) when it leaves the production line.

If it rides rough...it's a Z-71

Mine does not ride rough.

Towing package was never standard on any Z71. It is still optional, except now most dealers order it as a part of the light duty power package(5.3 engine, tow package, and locking rear differential). On older Z71s, locking differential was not standard either.

Yep,The Z71 package on the "Old-Body-Style" ('88-'99) trucks came with four things and four things only:

*Different front jounce bumpers (50mm high instead of the std. 65mm high)

*Skid Plates (Front Differential and Transfer Case)

*Bilstein gas charged shocks, and the most important....

*"Z71" decals
