2005 2500HD Steering Pump "whine"

Hello. Iv'e been looking around to find out if this is true or not, if not does anyone know a fix? I have a "whine" coming from what seems like the power steering pump. I have had my truck to the dealership and they confirmed that is what it is. The "whine" seems to coincide with engine R.P.M. as in goes up and down with the R.P.M. What they told me though is that the sound is normal on the 3/4 tons and it is just "the nature of the beast" and there is no OEM fix for the problem. Is this true?

i havent heard the power steering whine you are talking about yet. are you sure its not the trans.? I think most all the HDs and even my 1500 crew have the trans whining noise that changes with rpms. Which GM says is normal, yeah right

My 2500HD has the same whine you're talking about. I also think it's coming from the power steering pump.

 

I think it's pretty easy to tell the difference between transmission gear whine and power steering pump whine. The gear whine would only happen while moving. If your whine also happens in park, it's not the trans.

Finally found a dealership that would aknowledge that I wasn't crazy. They replaced the power steering pump and now I have no more noise.

Thanks for letting us know. I always love it when a dealership says "it's normal....they all do it" you know d**n well it just ain't true.

I also have a similiar whine noise coming from the engine compartment. Sounds like a Ford power steering pump.

 

Was told by a member from here that the Allison has an oil pump in the transmission and is the sound that I heard.

 

Truck is a 2006 2500HD with the 8.1 and Ally.

My 05 8.1/Ally doesn't make a whining noise at idle. In 1st gear pulling away yes, but not at idle.

You won't hear the allison oil pump while parked. Only when moving.
