Locking Diff.

I posted this in the Heavy Duty forum also, thought I might get more responses this way, so you might have seen this before.

When I ordered my truck (2002 2500HD CC 4X4), the dealer went through the list of options asking what I wanted and what I didn't.  When he got to locking diff., I wasn't sure, so I cheaped out and didn't get it (I know, I know, what's another $150 on a $30,000 + truck).  I figured that if it was a option and not standard, it might not be a "must have".  The more I think about it the more I wonder if I should have gotten it.

What are the pros and cons of the locking diff?  I know with the locker if one rear wheel spins the other will start turning, but with a 4X4 if one back wheel spins the front should pull you, right.  So do you really need it with a 4X4?  I guess I hope not because I really don't want to have any regrets about what I did or didn't get on the truck since I plan to drive it for a looooonnng time.  Will a locker (or the lack of) effect gas mileage or anything like that?

I am counting on you guys giving it to me straight.  Did I mess up and should I get on the phone to the dealer and see if I can add it or should I just forget about it?

If it matters, I don't plan on doing any real offroading, mostly needed 4X4 for getting down slick muddy roads to hunt and pull a boat up an icy boat ramp during duck season. Thanks a bunch

For the money the Eaton Locker is a great option.  It is a very solid connection in the rear-end unlike posi or limited slip.  It will apply power evenly between the rear wheels.

Is it a necessity?  Probably not... but if you get in a situation where you need it, it's money well spent.  If you want to add it as an aftermarket option be prepared to spend alot more $$$ then what the factory charges for it.

The big disadvantage I see with the "locker" is that on slippery roads, it is very easy to get your truck sideways in 2wd.  When only one rear tire is spinning, the truck will still track normally most of the time.
