Got mine for my 02 a wile back, but I had replaced them before I got the recall noticed, I submited a claim form to GM and they sent me a check for both cables. $34.00, you must have a recept from a GM dealer.

Yep, I got mine last Thursday. I already replaced mine 2 years ago when both let go just as I jumped off the tailgate. No tailgate damage luckily. 2 minutes sooner when I had about 200 Lbs of firewood on it, it would have been a different story.

GM would have repaired any damages caused by a cable brakeage, and have. Don't let them say they wont, Because this is a safety recall, due to people/Kids getting hurt by falling off the tailgate. and ANY damage caused by a recall must be repaired under that recall. per GM Customer Service ( A guy I work with got a new tailgate and bumper)

Can someone tell us exactly what models qualify? I have a 2004 Silverado 1/2 ton which they claim isn't in the group that its supposed to cover. The reason I ask it my cables look kinda rusty and crappy. Just wanted to make sure they werent giving me a load of bunk...again.

Yeah, I just got my recall a few days ago too. Why'd it take to long for those of us with the '99s?? Ours were the oldest and logically the first that would break.

However, (probably jinxing myself now), mine haven't broken yet.

Guess I'll have to make an appointment to have it and the ABS recall done together.

The original recall, IIRC, was for vehicles in certain areas of the country where the climate caused accelerated rusting. Didn't have a lot to do with a specific model year other than the "certain" 2000-2004 vehicles in the original recall.

There were enough reports of cables breaking in areas outside the areas GM originally covered in the recall that they got pressured into doing all the '99's. I wouldn't be suprised to see this recall being extended to all the new body style trucks over this year.

According to the letter I received, this recall is for all 1999 Silverado's.

Us Northerners got our cable recall over a year ago. You will enjoy that the new stainless steel cables are too long and whne you close the gate they stick out the gap between the gate and tailight. Also when I got mine installed the dealer forgot to take off the Made in China tags.

These new cables blow!

If the cables stick out from in-between the tailgate and taillights they are probably on the wrong side.

They are marked on the bottom,Where they bolt onto the tailgate itself,"LS" for left side and "RS" for right side,Check to make sure they put them on the correct side.

Stopped at the dealer today to make an appointment. The service writer said it's a 30 minute job to do.

That is what they did with mine. I got home, opened the gate, closed it and they were sticking out, looked hideous. I call them up and the nit wit say's "they all do that until they relax". Next day I go back and the guy says they put them on the wrong sides. I took the "made in china" stickers off myself.
