Oil capacity

When you guys with the 5.3 change oil do you put all 6 qts in the case then fill the filter or fill filter and put remaing 5+qts in case? Just curious, it seems if mine reads low if I don't use 6 qts and open a 7th for filter, using Napa gold.

I fill the filter first,Then put in the remaining 5+quarts of oil.

6 quarts of oil total.

I put some in the filter, wet the rubber seal, and then put 5 1/4 quarters in the crankcase. I start it up, let it run until I get oil pressure, then let it sit. Then I check the dipstick, and add as needed. I hate getting my case over-filled. 6 quarts is too much.

I never heard of anyone filling the oil filter with oil prior to installation. I have never seen it recommended in any repair or maintenance manual. You certainly cannot do that with a horizontally mounted filter. You can with a vertical filter, but why?

I don't know why - what is the path of the oil? That is from the pan to filter to engine? If so, then filling the filter is a great idea.

 

I do fill the filter because that is what my dad told me to do many years ago when I starting to change the oil on his cars. Still do it that way for mine.

Your engine gets lubed 10 seconds sooner if you prefill the filter. That's 10 seconds less opportunity to develop CSK.

Some people are obsesed with there oil and worry about the startup.In reality there engine at the engine plant was spun over and the filter was dry. The engine was started on the assembly line for the first time not at the engine plant but at the assembly plant. Oiling the filter dosent help enough to bother doing it. Millions of engines never get the filter primed and live for 2-300000miles.

I guess it just boils down to personal preference and your willingness to spin the CSK roulette wheel.

Ok, you got me. The dreaded CSK. Never had to worry about that before. And most vehicles I owned before had horizontal oil filters, so filling them with oil first would only make a big mess.

 

So, if these engines had horizontally mounted oil filters, how would you fill them with oil and make sure it stays in ? Hoisting the truck with a crane into avertical position would be one way.......

I use 6 quarts total in my 5.3 as specified in the manual. I pre-fill the filter (I recommend this) to get immediate oil pressure on start-up, put a little on the rubber filter gasket with my finger, and the remaining five-plus quarts go into the crankcase. I start the engine to check for any leaks around the filter or drain plug, make sure I have full oil pressure (about 45 to 50 psi at idle) and turn off the engine. I check the oil level on the dipstick after about a minute and it has always been exactly at the top full mark.
